Property Box - Custom Tab - Data References

Post by ADC65 » 11 Jan 2022 13:57

Is it possible to create a compound data field on a custom tab of the property box? For example, for a particular census, I would like to concatenate the Place and Address fields with a colon between. I can't get it to work, and the built-in help file says:
Not all possible data references are permitted. You cannot use data references for composite items which have no data of their own, and hence cannot be edited. And you cannot use data references which reference linked records. But any simple data reference (such as a reference to a date, place or number) will be fine. The data reference must be appropriate to the record type in question.
I am guessing that the reference to composite items might mean I cannot achieve afield that outputs, for example, "Plymouth, Devon, England : The Citadel" by using the INDI.CENS[year=xxxx].PLAC and INDI.CENS[year=xxxx].ADDR data references ... or maybe I'm just doing it incorrectly.

(Please note I don't want to put the data into Part 1 and Part 2 of the Item, as I want something else in Part 2.)

Any advice appreciated, Thanks.

FH does not allow anything more than a single simple Data Reference in a custom tab field.
I don't understand why that restriction exists instead of allowing full expressions as elsewhere.
Such expressions would have to be read-only displays but would be better than not allowed at all.

Thanks Mike, I suspected that was the case but wanted to verify I wasn't doing something incorrectly or if there was clever work-around. Thanks for the reply.
