FH Hints

Post by laz_gen » 07 Jan 2022 08:12

Has anyone else noticed the FMP hints are no longer working. They don't show automatically and if I click to refresh them there is a quick flash of the hint circle but nothing more.

I am not sure but this may have coincided with the release of the 1921 so perhaps something has changed at the FMP end.

FH and browser restarted to no avail.

I have mine set to open in External Web Browser and get this (I've tried multiple people):

The little circles alerting me to hints are displaying OK in FH or me, but when I click through to FMP, I get 'Oops something went wrong' from FMP... I suspect the hordes of eager genealogists exploring the 1921 census might be slowing things down a little at their end :D

I don't think it's a loading issue, the "something went wrong" comes back very quickly!

I raised a ticket and have had this response:

This appears to be a problem as Find My Past and we have logged the problem with them.

As the problem is with FMP, it's well worth raising the problem directly with FMP if you are subscriber, to encourage them to prioritise the problem.

In the last 6 months I have found that a number of "complex" webpages (Ancestry, FMP, Ebay, Amazon etc.) have started to fail to load completely, sometimes throwing 500 server errors (the generic "server error"). In extreme cases I do not get the CSS or images or external javascript files. Sometimes Ctrl-R "solves" the problem.

My ISP say they have not changed anything - I am still on ADSL2 but close to a BT box so I am getting 12Mb download which has always been adequate.

I wonder if there has been a technology change (ajax?) which has introduced subtle timing changes which are in some instances tripping up more complex webpages?

FH6 uses the IE web browser. You can get around the problem by setting FH to use an external web browser in preferences.

The latest FH7 version does not have this problem as it can install a replacement Web 2.0 browser as using in MS edge.

If you are using an external browser make sure you have to most up to date versions for your OS
