Bad Habit caught up with me

Post by joe81au » 23 Oct 2021 19:01

40+ years ago when software was not nearly developed as it it is today, I made a habit of capitalizing surnames. So no matter the capitalize surname option setting in FH7 I always see capitals. I have come to dislike the look especially for O'Donnell, McIntosh etc.

With a data base of 25,000 names it would be tedious to manual edit every name and even search and replace tools would require each surname to be handled individually. I took a look at the available plug-ins and didn't see a good option.

It seems I would need something to replace the GED string /CARTER/ with /Carter/ with some special arrangements for the O'Neils, MacHenry and McIntoshes of the world.

Did I miss a tool or does anyone have suggestions as to how to go about this task?

I haven't used it, but there is a plugin called Clean Up Surname Capitalization which appears to do what you want, but it hasn't been updated for FH 7. Jane would know if it will work or not in FH 7.

That plugin will do the job but needs a minor edit to work in FH v7.

If Jane does not respond soon, I could explain what to do, but I don't want to steal her thunder!

Thanks Bill and Mike, I'll wait. I thought you guys had probably faced this issue before.

Worked like a champ. I had to run it 3 times since the database was so large. Many thanks
