editing individual summary report sections

Post by rlparsons » 11 Jul 2021 15:01

I wish to edit the content of the Main section of an individual summary report but can't fathom out the Report Options system!
My current Report shows the Notes I wish to include under the "Individual Note" headed section of the report (which I want) but also in the Main Section "Note" (which I don't).
When the Report has been generated and is on the screen, I open the Report Options box. The left hand "Sections" pane has all the Sections ticked. The right hand "Main Section Items in order" pane shows the status of the individual items but I can't see how to customise these individual items to a specific Section e.g. to hide one item within a specific Section! If I untick all the Sections except e.g. the Main, nothing changes.
Am I suffering from Euro 2020 brain fusion or missing something obvious? Must be getting old! Thanks
Still on V6

It should make a difference. You should fnd that if you untick the "individual Record Notes" box in the left hand panel the section of the report headed "individual Note" disappears. However you want that section, so leave it ticked.

The appearance of the same note in the Main Section (which you don't want) is controlled in the "Main Section Items" list on the right. Scroll down to Notes, select that item and click Edit above the list. Then select Hide.

(I've tested this in V7, but it should be the same in V6).

The settings that Lorna describes are the default with Individual Record Notes ticked and Main Section Notes hidden.

So, one tactic to try is to use the Installation Settings button in v6 or the Restore Defaults button in v7.
BUT, if you have some specially customised settings then use Save Report As > Custom Report Type... first to preserve a copy of your settings. (As a general rule keep the standard report with default settings as a reference and always create custom reports for your alternative settings.)

If the default settings cure your Report problem then you will need to carefully review those settings against your custom settings to determine which need adjusting.

Thanks folks.
a) I was obviously misunderstanding the screen. Should have looked harder! Now I understand the logic.
b) Mike, I have checked with several projects I have and they all have the same settings for the Report Options! When I change a Main Section Item setting on one project, close the project and open a new project those settings are changed on the newly opened one as well!
A minor item but something for other V6 users to be aware of?

Yes, most settings in all versions of FH from v2 to v7 apply to all Projects.
That applies to Tools > Preferences, Diagrams, Reports, Tools > Fact Types, Queries, Plugins, etc, etc...
See the Knowledge Base Understanding the Scope of Features for details.

That is why it is advisable to only change settings in custom cloned copies of Diagrams and Reports.
Keep the standard Diagrams and Reports with their installed default settings as a reference.
