Move Note URL to Rich Text Web Link

Post by David2416 » 20 Mar 2021 08:40

Hi Mike,

A big thank you for the very handy plugin. :D

I had a lot of URLs in my Source Notes which this Plugin converted to active links in FH V7. Wonderful - thank you.

(BTW don't run it a second time on a project which I clumisily did. I found the links became broken being converted to just h<web=">
Easily rectified by running Edit > Undo Plugin Updates )

Thank you David. I will make a Note (sic) to see if the plugin can avoid those problems when run twice.

Mike, I had noticed this, too. Running the plugin a second time unexpectedly ‘chops off’ the “h” in “http”. I easily fixed it via a search & replace to the GEDCOM.
There normally wouldn’t be a need to run this plugin another time, but I had merged a small branch from another FTM import, and used this excellent tool to make the new weblinks active.

To clarify…
This is what mine looked like.
I still don’t know enough about plugin coding to speak with any authority, but my case may be related to the Clean Up Notes plugin. (?) I had run that first (to delete the leading blank lines), because it destroys the rich text formatting; and then ran Move Note URL to Rich Text Web Link. The result was as in this screen clip.

As I said, these were easily fixed.

But I experimented on a test DB. I duplicated the above. But simply running Move Note URL twice not only ‘chops off’ the “h” in “http”, but loses the rest. And the rich text coding is misplaced?

I don’t know if my experience is a clue, or just another point on the curve.
I don’t think it’s a high priority to “fix” either of these plugins, but they are both very valuable tools for us FTM refugees. (I know how to use them now.) They’re probably useful for others, too.

Thank you for the feedback.
I'll look at the Plugin in due course, but the general advice is to 'tidy up' the Project before Merging it into your master Project.
In other words, repeat the process you applied to your master Project to tidy Notes, URL, UDF, etc, in the new Project.
Then you know you are Merging a tidy Project into a tidy Project.
See FHUG KB Merge/Compare File.

The Move Note URL to Rich Text Web Link plugin Version 1.1 Date 01 Apr 2021 is now in the Plugin Store.

This version resolves the problem of it upsetting Rich Text Web Links that already exist.
