Remove returns after using the Move Note Url to Rich Text Note

Post by MFriend » 08 Mar 2021 04:12

Hi Mike:

I tried looking at the code for the (wonderful) plugin you made a month or so ago. I looked at the code in the plugin to see if I could edit it but couldn't figure it out. If you have time I would appreciate maybe a short explanation how I could tweak it?

So I now have over 10,000 links and they work perfect in FH 7 (thank you). I originally was going to this
section to click on the link:

Then I figured out it is quicker to click on it on the first tab that opens here:

The link is not visible (just looks blank) until the down arrow is clicked once.

My question without prolonging the explanation is how can I remove the extra 2 (or at least one so I can see the link without clicking the arrow). It doesn't take long to do,... but like I said the last time I imported from FTM into FH 7 it said I had over 10,000 ..

(I'm ready to do my last and hopefully final import from FTM into FH 7 so if the fix involves changing something before import, after import, or in the plugin I can do it )

Thank you for your time Mike,

Sincerely,
Matthew

Matthew, it looks like you need to remove some leading blank lines from those Citation Notes.
So, I suggest you use the Search and Replace plugin as follows...

In its Basic Filters ensure only Note & Description fields is ticked.
To narrow the search further use the Extra Filters tab and select a specific type of Note, e.g. Citation (~SOUR.NOTE)

In Search Criteria enable Lua Pattern Mode and Show White Space.
Set Search: to ^¶¶ by using the Enter/Return key to enter ¶ pilcrow newline characters.
The ^ is a 'magic pattern' symbol that anchors the pattern to the start of the text.
Leave Replace: blank.

Click Search & Replace and when happy it is replacing correctly then untick Confirm every item found.

Review the results and if anything looks unsatisfactory then use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates.

Thank you Mike, that worked perfect!

I really do appreciate how helpful you are.

On a side note, folks do listen to what you say. When I was first trying to get help to have the URL's included in FH 7 you said:

"I presume you know that those URL will only work if you are signed in to Ancestry with your subscription account?
If you are not signed in, or your subscription lapses, or the GEDCOM migrates to someone else, then the URL are useless.
In longer-term it would be better to download whatever those URL link to so they become local transcripts or images."

You got me to thinking about the fact that the online images, sources, index url might change so I've been making copies in .png (for use in FH) and also .pdf ( pdf makes all links clickable) as well as creating a separate page in Onenote for each citation (I use a plugin that makes this all quick by creating a new page, inserting the image, etc.). The links are great, but I've been working towards local backups for all my citations :)

Last week this was 'brought home' to me when I was working on one of my 'brick walls'. This person has an index for their marriage on Familysearch and a link to the original image. The marriage index/image was cited as a source last October, but already the image link is broken and I was unable to find any trace of the original image that it was supposed to be based off of.

So thanks again for all the time, effort and patience you show with so many folks that you help both here in this forum and through the many hours you put into making the plugins. You are a real asset to the FH community :)

Thank you for that feedback.
Have you been following Import gedcom with photos from online url (19031) regarding downloading using the URL in GEDCOM?
