Attempting to create a Hospital Admission fact

Post by bbottomley » 24 Jan 2021 15:27

I'm trying to create a Hospital Admission fact.

I initially though of copying the standard Death fact and altering the sentence template to suit along the lines of:
Individual was admitted to address on date for treatment of cause.
A fact for imprisonment would follow a similar structure, and in my ancestors' case, a greater need!

However when I tried to do that I found I couldn't rename the fact and as a result it was showing as <eclipsed> and <disabled> So I guess my first question is, what did I do wrong?

I then tried to create a custom fact with a similar sentence template, however I seemed unable to manage to develop a fact which provided a cause field to populate as it does in the Death fact.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but for the life of me and despite going through the help section and the forum posts, can't see anything to assist.

Many thanks in advance
Brian

You cannot rename Fact Type definitions.

I strongly advise you Delete the Death copies you made to avoid confusion in the future..
Don't worry, you cannot accidentally delete the standard master Death definition.

Many users have asked about the Cause field for facts other than Death.
It is allowed in the GEDCOM specification for every fact and is supported via the All tab for every fact, and the {cause} code is supported in every Sentence Template, but for reasons best known to Calico Pie they do not allow it to appear in the Facts tab except for the Death event. Preferably, it needs a tick option in the Fact Type definition like the other optional fields Date, Place, Note, Age & Address.

So you can use it in your custom facts, but must do so via the All tab right-click options.

Try reporting the lack of Cause fields to Calico Pie.

Thanks Mike for your usual quick reply.

Yes I had deleted the spurious Death facts I'd created. As you say, the risk of confusion awaits!

What a cock-eyed way of entering the cause via the back door so to speak! I must admit I'd never really given the All tab much attention, let alone right clicking the fact for additional options.

I'll certainly get a report off to Calico Pie.

Yet again, many thanks for your help

Oh there's all sorts of stuff on the All-Tab that can be used with benefits. Like Organisation being used for Occupation facts?

Maybe the feeling was that if CP allowed them all to appear on the Fact tab, it was going to get too crowded.

Mike,

Following my report to CP I got the following reply from Martin

"So why can't you specify 'Cause' as a required field for the Facts tab? I can't think of any good reason. We have made a note to look at that. Thank you for raising this issue."

So fingers crossed

Brian
