Census entry - Boarder

Post by neil40 » 03 Jan 2021 20:58

Hello all

My Grandfather is a Boarder in a household in 1911 census, and this is something I've never tackled before - only household of the same family before.
Therefore, I am after some guidance.
When I add the Head/Wife etc. who are not related to my Grandfather and therefore not in my FH database, do I add them to the AS grid using Add Unrelated Individual button for each person, or when the Head is added in this way, do I then use the Add Spouse?
I suspect if I use Spouse, this will relate that person to my Grandfather?
If they are all 'Add Unrelated' method, will they then not be related to each other when added to FH?
Thanks
Neil

I don't know that there is "correct" way to do this.

What I do is add my known relative as the only person in the grid and then add the other names in the Note field in case I find out later that they are in fact related to me. I don't want a bunch of unrelated individuals in my file.

If you add them as unrelated individuals, they will not be related to you in FH.

I similarly only add the relative(s) (who is lodger, border etc.), and ignore the other people as I am not interested in them. I do however also keep a copy of the census image in case I want to have a subsequent look, so I still have the information if it became interesting.

The other fun is when you get a niece/nephew/grandchild etc. and then have to work out which sibling of the head/wife they belong to if you've never come across them before, or which child they belong to. Usually ends up as another rabbit hole to get distracted in to.

Thanks both,
I just found another similar thread where the same recommendations were made.

I've also looked at Census entries with niece/grandson/grandaughter etc and had to do some head scratching to work out who they were related to!

I am going to employ the Notes option.

The other technique is to just add the FH relation as described earlier, but in the AutoText manually edit the table to include the others in the household so it becomes a literal transcript of the Census image.

Editing the AutoText to turn it into a faithful transcript is a common requirement and advised in the AS Help pages, for any type of data not just Census.

Thanks Mike,
I like that idea

My practice is to at least add the Head/Wife if there a not a lot, I do tend to add the other boarders/lodgers/visitors to my FH database. Once in a while they do become related later in my researches. If there were perhaps too many to add, I would still add the names in a note so that I had a chance of finding/remembering them later.

I came to FH in the first place for similar reasons - because it had the capability to record witnesses to marriage facts.
