* Apparent failure to transcribe TMG text format code on import

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Apparent failure to transcribe TMG text format code on import

Post by JohnLiddle » 17 Dec 2020 17:40

UPDATE - I have now raised a support ticket on this

I have been footling around with a subset of my TMG database to assess the improved import process and I seem to have come across a problem.

In my sources on TMG, I use the TMG italic code [ITAL:] text goes here[:ITAL].

Instead of being transcribed into the FH code <i>text goes here</i>, I find that the TMG codes are ported into FH unchanged.

I know I could do a search and replace exercise, but surely this should be part of the import process?

Or have I missed some import setting?

P.S. - Seems to be true of BOLD code as well

I raised a ticket with FH suggesting that translation of these codes should be part of the import process and within a commendably short space time got an answer, reproduced below.

"As you rightly say, it could be handled as part of the input process. However, we weren't quite sure what to do with them because <i> and </i> are currently not supported in sentence templates (they are supported in source templates but not sentence templates). Where we weren't sure what to do about something, we tended to err on the side of leaving it up to the user. For now, you can solve the problem either by tweaking the code replacement file to handle them however you want (click 'Code Replacements' button during import options and then read the instructions on how to do this), or - as you say - by a simple search-replace post import (probably much easier). Actually the latter will work for sentence overrides. You probably also want to check to see if the same arises with any fact definitions, and correct them if so."
