Where does Insertion point go?

Post by Gowermick » 01 Jul 2020 09:03

Silly question, but this has been bugging me a lot recently, and I keep falling for same trap!

In an Individual's property box, I click Add Fact, select a fact type and press return, and without really looking at screen, start typing the entry for the first field.

But the cursor is not in the first field, and nothing is entered!! I have to tab again to get insertion point/cursor into the first field.

My question is why doesn't cursor immediately jump to first field after selecting fact type? Where does it go?

No fields on the property box take focus until you click into the first input field, this is the same if you click on an existing fact or add one. My feeling is this is best as you need to select the field to start editing. If it did something different on Add it could be confusing to some.

Jane, I beg to differ,

This is exactly what it does when you add a new individual. When you choose to add a new person, it places the cursor in first field of property box, ready for input, so why should adding a new fact be different? It is this inconsistency that catches me out, and which I find confusing.

In every other database I've come across, when you say you wish to add a record, it puts you in the first field, ready for data entry!
