Dealing with two or more notes in a fact

Post by karinf » 17 Jun 2020 14:37

Is there any reasonably straightforward way to either display a second local fact note in the Properties window or to list individuals and ideally the relevant fact that has two or more such notes. When I had my tree in FMP it was fairly easy to add a 2nd note to the same fact and I must have done this on certain occasions when it seemed appropriate. These 2nd fact notes have imported into fh (I can find them if I open up fact details in the All tab of the property window or run the 'Notes list for Individual' plugin and again open up to see the underlying GEDCOM details where it shows two notes following each other in the fact ), but as they do not show up anywhere obvious I had not spotted them when doing some recent tidying up. I only noticed them when I was checking a recently tidied up individual in a backup version I had copied into FMP and saw they had both my recently edited note and a 2nd note.

Ideally I would like to produce a list of the individuals and facts that have two or more such notes so that I can check for any useful information in the 2nd note while doing my tidying up and if appropriate incorporate it within the single note showing on the Facts tab of the property box and delete the 2nd note. If by any chance this is any easier to do within FMP or in a 'raw' GEDCOM file (e.g. searching for two lines following each other both starting NOTE this would be OK). NB have just seen that by opening a copy of the GEDCOM in Notepad I can search for NOTE and fairly easily spot where two follow each other (shouldn't take too long for the 20 or so instances I may have in a database of 400 individuals).

However, I then come across the problem of how to delete the second note in fh as this option only seems to be available for the first of the two notes (which is the one I generally want to keep!).

Hope all this makes sense and is not answered elsewhere - I haven't been able to find on a search. I realise it is probably something I should have thought about/realised when I did the initial import, but too late now!

As usual for these sorts of problems you need to use a query.

I have attached a query which will list all the facts in your database which have a second note. Once you have added the text to the first note, if needed, just select the cell in the result set for the 2nd note and press the delete key.

Many thanks for the Custom query Jane. As well as making use of it I will have a look at the coding behind it as I must try to get my head round queries properly. I have now produced a list and printed it out so that I can check off people dealt with - I'm glad I asked and found the 'unshown' notes at this stage as it turns out there are about 70 facts with 2 or more queries. I will have to go back to some I thought I had already fully 'tidied', but at least with others I can copy both the notes into the one visible place and deal with them as I progress onto other branches of the family.

It does not seem to be easy to edit the notes within the results window as they are curtailed by the width of the page/screen but by clicking on the Locate in All Tab they are easier to see and copy/delete. However, this leaves a 'spare' Note row heading with nothing after it in this tab. Will this matter, or should I make any adjustments I want then come back to the results page to delete the 2nd note there?

Thanks, Karin

Ignore query at end of last reply. I've now got into a routine of editing in the All tab and then deleting in the query results window and it is working OK. Only another 50 or so to go! Once again, many thanks.
