Changing a childs father record.

Post by flavius » 18 Feb 2018 20:42

Hello, Recently I have discovered that the father of a child is not her biological father. I know who the biological father is and I am wondering how to unlink her from the wrong father and connect her to the correct one and keep her attached and close to her mother. Hope this makes sense. I am using the latest version of FH. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, see how_to:removing_unwanted_relations|> Removing Unwanted Relations but don't follow that blindly.

In your case you may just need to remove the unwanted father.
i.e.
Right-click on the unwanted father's Individual box and choose Unlink Record assuming you want to keep his record.
Otherwise choose Delete Record and confirm.

Then click the Add/Husband Partner link and add biological father in the normal way.

However, is the 'unwanted father' another partner of the child's mother?
Did he adopt or foster the child, or perhaps was a step-father?

In which case you need to keep him as part of the family.
See how_to:recording_children_other|> Recording Children for Multiple Partnerships and how_to:recording_children_with_foster_adoptive_parents|> Recording Children with Foster/Adoptive Parents that are all part of the how_to:index#adjusting_family_relationships|> Adjusting Family Relationships section.

One possibility, assuming the child is linked to the biological mother and a non-biological father. You should first, if necessary, create a new family with the biological father and biological mother, i.e. link the biological father to the biological mother as another spouse. Link the child to this biological family and then unlink the child from the existing family.

Yes, until it is clear what the relationships are between the mother, daughter, birth father, and other man, then it is difficult to advise what you need to do, but it should be evident form the advice provided.
Ensure you take a Small Backup before you start rearranging, just in case!
