I have recently purchased a lightweight Lenovo notebook. It is running a fully updated Windows 10. I have successfully installed and run FH using the migration guides. However Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0). This is as Microsoft describes it a Features on Demand. I have tried installing this using the dialogues provided but Windows cannot find the relevant files. The relevant MS helpboards don't help - they end a diatribe against MS. Trying the alternative MS recommended add windows features mechanism also fails.
I have tried adding this package using the .CAB package I download using the DISM command to no avail.
(DISM.EXE /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:Users\dacoo\Downloads\Microsoft-Windows-NetFx3-OnDemand-Package.cab)
Could the AS installation package help with this?
Or any other ideas?

David, just install AS and if it needs to it will also install .NET Framework.
However, it is already available in Windows 10 and just needs turning on:
Try performing a System Restore to before you started.
Since .NET is an integral part of Windows 10, if it does not work on your Lenovo, then take it back to the retailer and demand that they fix it or replace it.

Maybe your other attempts to install .NET Framework have upset something.Windows 10 Creators Update (all editions) includes the .NET Framework 4.7 as an OS component, and it is installed by default. It also includes the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 as an OS component that is not installed by default.
Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 in Control Panel > Programs & Features via Turn Windows features on or off dialog box. Select the .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) check box, select OK, and reboot your computer if prompted.

Hi tatewise,
Thank you.
I tried the enabling via control panel. It does not work at this component is not installed. The attempt to install via Windows Update also fails. Reinstalling AS failed to install .NET 3.5 Windows just fails to find the necessary files. I worked with Windows long enough to know that sometimes the standard methods just do not work as one would expect. A system restore point would avail nothing in this instance.
I have found the solution at https://www.quora.com/While-I-download- ... this-error Essentially I have downloaded the .cab file Microsoft-Windows-NetFx3-OnDemand-Package.cab moved it to the C: root. Then run DISM.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /Source:c:\ /LimitAccess from the command prompt as administrator.
The Lenovo only has a 64gb ssd drive so the Windows version lacks certain features to slim down the OS (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mni ... indows-10/)

Re: Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0)
This thread alarmed me as I too use a basic Lenovo windows 10 lap top. It is my portable lap top to take into archives.
Yoga 3 11, 800 Ram, Processor 80 GHz, hard drive 119 GB.
Mine is almost two years old bought when fh could not longer run on Windows xp. It was bought with Widows 8 and went through the automatic update to Windows 10. I saw this thread and checked my own situation.
My protection is MacAfee. My Windows and Lenovo and all updates on the lap top are set to automatic.
I saw to my surprise that I had not installed Ancestral Sources. So I went on line, found the download site for AS and down loaded it. When I clicked, it ran automatically. I was asked the usual question about whether I wanted the unknown software to alter my computer, clicked to OKay that and the installation took place with no problem.
The program opened normally and I assume it works. As I said, it isnt much help except to reassure other people that with 119 GB hard drive, AS installed with no problem. And no error messages.

Re: Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0)
I am sorry this caused you alarm. I suspect that as you started with Windows 8, .NET 3.5 was already installed. The problem I experienced was starting from Windows 10, where .NET 3.5 is optional in certain situations. In theory the installation of Ancestral Sources should have dealt with this. AS provided the Windows dialogue for installing that version of .NET; unfortunately that dialogue failed, due perhaps a problem with the Windows update not finding the requisite files. The links and information I posted hopefully provide a workaround for this which is essentially a Windows issue. It is not something the average user should have to deal with imho.
Re: Ancestral Sources needs .NET Framework 3.5 ( includes NET 2.0 and 3.0)
It is good to learn that you did not experience a problem and AS installed successfully. Hopefully this will be the case for most.
