Hello,
I wonder if some nice person can help me please?
I have started to browse on line sources for other activities (court, gaol and paper notices) and have now set up an event called Criminal Activity against one of my ancestors and I have attached two media items to it.....one a paper notice and one a gaol record. Is there any way of attaching a source record for each media entry i.e.(Gloucester Gaol records for media 1 and Wilts and Glos Journal for media 2) as I can't seem to find an 'attach source' option? Any help would be much appreciated.
many thanks
PP

Re: Source for Media attachments
You can't attach a source to a Media record, but you can attach media to a Source record.
Start by creating a Source record for each. One will be called something like "John Smith: gaol records". In the Publication field you could enter the website where you found the images, and in the Repository field enter the physical location of the original records (if you know it). Some people prefer to enter the website in the repository field - it's a matter of choosing a method and being consistent. Then link the media image(s) of the gaol records to the Source record. As you already have the media in FH, choose the Link to Existing Media Record option. You could also add a summary of the information in the Note field of the Source record, and/or a transcription of the text in the Text from Source field. Then cite this Source record against the Criminal Activity event.
Similarly for the second source, create a Source record and link the existing newspaper image to it.

If the record is small enough you can use 'snatchMyScreen' and mark out what you want to copy
Once you have done that go to the focus window where you have added the details on FH then prompt the fact tab
and then open the media ikon which will open a menu. At the top is says 'add media for fact' open the menu at the bottom it says 'Paste copied image'
Wait whilst the image is copied then prompt edit and add details on there
I have been doing this all the time adding the BMD references after using Snatch My Screen to copy them. Once I have copied this they appear next to the BMD details of the person instead of in the appendix at the end of narrative reports. I don't use the GRO plug in unless I don't am image of the BMD details which appears on Ancrestry

Re: Source for Media attachments
Using Lorna's technique you will finish up with Sources and Citations similar to those produced by Ancestral Sources that I know you use for BMD documents.
Use those and similar Sources and Citations in the Family Historian Sample Project as a model.
For further details about Sources and Citations see glossary:sources|> Source Records which is a topic in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

Re: Source for Media attachments
Thank you to Lorna, Victor and Mike for your responses. I'll give it a shot and try and set it up like the AS interface option. I use a snipping tool for the BMD qtr info actual church records and attach via AS, works very well. But attaching other info manually (newspaper clips etc) I seem to have come a bit unstuck re Source and Media attachments! It looks like I'll have to change it to Source then Media from Media then Source. I have only just started so I just need to look at half a dozen entries. Thanks again.
