Report formats

Post by E Wilcock » 13 Aug 2017 08:22

I should like a little guidance please on fh Report generation - text reports, not charts.
There appears to be a simple choice - A narrative format in which all the information about a person is in one continuous paragraph, with no Tag headings.

Or a tag by tag output in which succeeding generations are indented - a layout with lines that I find quite confusing.

Are there other report formats?
Or is it possible to customise either of the above and save as a custom report?

Evelyn, it would help if you were more specific so I don't have to guess.
Are you comparing Publish > Narrative Reports > Descendants by Generation against Publish > Outline Reports > Descendant Outline?

Narrative Reports are largely governed by the Sentence Template for each Fact in Tools > Fact Types, but can be overridden by the Sentence box in specific Facts. See how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates|> Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates for details.

You could for example customise each Sentence Template so it begins <br>{label}: which would start each Fact on a new line with is Label name.

Outline Reports can certainly be customised to remove the lines and each Fact start on a new line.
See Report > Options > Main tab Connecting Lines and Layout Events and Attributes ... on separate lines.

Investigate all the other Report > Options and tell us what style you would like so we can advise about options to achieve that.
Then, yes, that can be saved as a Custom Report Type.

Also have you reviewed the Individual Summary report, or tried looking at the Publishing Tools Finder which tells you all about each of the available reports.

I assumed Evelyn wanted multi-Generation reports, but Individual Summary Reports for an ordered selection of Individuals from say a Named List could be another possibility.
