Exporting specific people

Post by neil40 » 03 Aug 2017 22:06

Hello all

I want to export part of my tree as a Gedcom to share with a distant cousin.
It is specifically my grandmothers ancestry from the most distant relative I have found. He had two sons, and I am descended from one son and the other person I want to share with, from the other son.

When I try to export, I can only seem to be able to pick the top person and other persons, or all people. I don't want to share this latter option with him as naturally, it contains lots of people on my other side of the family that don't concern him at all.

Am I missing something. Would be great to pick a person and export all their descendants.

Any tips welcomed.
Thanks
Neil

You have a lot of options for this you just need to use the Query button at the bottom of the export dialog, personally I normally use All Relatives and select the person I am sending to on the selection. That will include all the relations of the person selected. Alternately if you want all the descendants, select the Descendants query or use the Relatives button to select the descendants of the person you select.

See how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media that describes the technique mentioned by Jane, and some other points to consider.

Do you know what genealogy product your distant cousin will be using?
Will it be FH or some other product?
If it is not FH then the FH dialect of Gedcom may not work well with that other product unless you use the Export Gedcom File Plugin.

Does your distant cousin just want a summary of the family tree or perhaps plans to do further research?
If only a summary is required then maybe Diagrams, Reports, Family Tree CD, or an online family tree would be better?

...or, as I often do, is work from a diagram and select the individuals that you want to export (use the mouse to draw a box around multiple individuals and/or hold down the Ctrl key to select multiple individuals or boxes) then on the Edit menu select Add to Named List...., create a new list and then Add.

If you miss some people, or want to do the selection in stages, you can repeat and just add more people to the list.

Then when exporting just choose Named List, and set options to include/exclude associated data (eg media).

Experiment on the FH Sample Project to get familiar with the process.

Yes, David, that is all explained in the Knowledge Base advice I referenced, and is one of the "other points to consider".
