I am just about to buy a new computer to replace my increasingly unreliable old one. I purchased Family Historian 6 a while ago on CD. The loaded version has now been updated automatically in several stages to V6.2.4. If I load my CD onto the new computer, will it automatically update itself to 6.2.4 when I go on line, or do I need to go down some other route? Will I be able to safely transfer the existing files (currently on 6.2.4) before the version on the new computer has been upgraded?

Re: Transferring FH to a new computer
That is a well trodden path David and is fully explained in the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.
Do study it carefully, but to answer your specific questions, you should install the CD on new PC, and upgrade both PC to the latest version, which is now 6.2.5 from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade.
Then copy all FH data from old PC to new PC including all your customisations and preferences by using the Backup and Restore FH Settings Plugin.

Re: Transferring FH to a new computer
Thanks for the advice Mike
After a long delay while moving house I have successfully transferred FH to my new computer. However, due to the delay, when I backed up the old file it was on version 6.2.5, and now I have restored it onto 6.2.7. You specifically said I should update both computers to the same version, but I no longer have the old computer. Is there any problem which could arise from transferring to a different version. Everything seems to work OK with maps, images, media, etc, transferred.
Can you please set my mind at rest. Many thanks.

Re: Transferring FH to a new computer
Everything should transfer satisfactorily to FH V6.2.7.
In future, if the same scenario arises again it would be best to preserve the downloaded file last installed on the old PC, and include it in backups, so you can use that on the new PC.
Your Projects from V6.2.4 will migrate without any problems.
I presume you have performed the checks recommended in how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide at step 6).
I hope you used the Backup and Restore FH Settings Plugin as recommended.
When you perform step 7) it will complain that the current program version and backup data version don't match.
But on its Options tab there is an option to Allow the FH Program version to be later than the Backup Data Version.
