Unable to display dialog

Post by RonC47 » 08 Feb 2017 12:31

In the last couple of days I put my tree data on the cloud. All went well. The idea was that my wife and I could access the tree symultaneously. I have done it in the past and it worked. When I started FH on my wife's computer not unexpectedly some of the picture links were lost. I ran auto repair links this repaired some but not all the links. On checking I discovered that some of the pictures had not transferred to the cloud. I got then transferred. and went back to FH to fix the links but when I click on 'Work with External File Links' I get an error box 'An error has occurred. Unables to display dialog'

I have downloaded v6.2.2 and this did not solve the problem. (It was already v6.2.2)

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the FHUG Ron.
I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum, because as the User Group description says it is for: "Suggestions and requests for help on using this site. For help with Family Historian please post in the General Usage Forum".

As an aside, please be careful if you and your wife access the same FH Project simultaneously from different PC. Not only will the two copies of FH probably disrupt the Project files, but it also infringes the licence terms unless you have purchased two licences. Related topics are:
how_to:about#licence_agreement|> Licence Agreement
fhugdownloads:synchro|> Downloads and Links ~ Synchronise and Backup Tools with advice on cloud synchronisation, which if carried out correctly should not upset the Media links providing all Media links in a Project are relative links within the Media folder.

Back to your dialogue problem, which sounds very similar to Unable to display dialog for External File Links (14591). That was caused by a recently downloaded Media file with corrupt meta-data, and was cured by downloading it again.

Hi Mike, We've each always had our own of FH. Have been sharing the cloud for some years now without problem. However, Pauline researches her branch and I mine. I will see if I have a problematic picture file.
Many thanks

Hi Ron, even when researching different branches, if sharing the same Project then the two copies of FH are sharing the same Gedcom file and any Save or Autosave risks disrupting that file. I would expect from time to time you get the pop-up message saying the file has been updated by another program.

Similar conflicts arise if the same Plugin is run on same Project in both copies of FH, or other similar commands are used not even at the same time.

This assumes that by sharing the cloud you mean directly synchronised rather than copied from the live Project files.

If none of the above problems have arisen then I think you have been very lucky.
