GRO Search facility - possible error

Post by steveflanuk » 05 Feb 2017 22:23

All

I've have come across a possible issue with the GRO search facility. When I searched for a birth in 1888 for Q2 - the results came back for Q1. I tried again, using Q1 in the search, and the results came back as Q2.

I tried again with other names and other years, and the issue appears to still remain (Q2 searches showing Q1 results, and vice versa).

I've let the GRO know, but just wanted to let you all know in case anyone was 'missing' any births.

I am not seeing that. I wonder if you are misreading the notation.

Q1 is entered as Jan-Feb-Mar and in Results as M Quarter i.e. March Quarter
Q2 is entered as Apr-May-Jun and in Results as J Quarter i.e. June Quarter
Q3 is entered as Jul-Aug-Sep and in Results as S Quarter i.e. Sept Quarter
Q4 is entered as Oct-Nov-Dec and in Results as D Quarter i.e. Dec Quarter

They use initial of last month of each Quarter because first month would involve two J's

Apologies for potentially mis-leading you all as it appears I've got mixed up reading the quarters as J and M in the results - as Mike has already pointed out.

It looks like I was reading J as January when it's really June.

Doesn't help when you're looking for a birth in May!!!!

Might have been more clearer if they use numbers (1, 2, 3 and 4) instead of letters (M, J, S and D)

From memory, the GRO always use the triple-month designation for its Index pages.

I think it unlikely they would now start using Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4.

But you could suggest to them to use the triple-month designation for the Results so it is consistent with the choices above and to avoid confusion. It is a Beta test site so they may take notice.

Mike

I've been in touch with Peter who runs the Lost Cousins website and was heavily involved in the pre-Beta testing and he's told me that he suggested changing the results to Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 to help avoid confusion - but this suggestion was rejected.

Hopefully they will consider the alternative of using the same designation in the results as they do in the search terms (Jan-Feb-Mar, etc) - or at least expand the quarter name to Mar, etc. rather than the single letter usage they are currently using.

It is a fantastic resource and definitely one of the most important ever released to the genealogical world - however I think there is potential for some confusion. Saying that, the confusion in this instance is probably 99.9% my own fault.
