Altering Source Record Title

Post by gumtree » 08 Nov 2016 10:46

I wish to alter some of my Source Record Titles to make them more relevant. Could you please let me know how to do this please. I cannot add to the titles as they are at the moment nor delete an unwanted title.
Thank you.

I am not clear as to why you can't do this. Simply select the Source and edit the title. You can either access it using the View>Record Lists>Sources or find a citation to a source and then click on the blue arrow in the citation pane to move to the source record to edit it.

eg. I click marriage. Then add citation. The select source pane comes up and when I click eg. 1842 census it goes blue but I cannot change the text.
Thank you.

In that Select source... dialogue you are adding a Citation link to an existing Source record.
Continue the process and actually add the Citation of that Source.
Then you can click the blue arrow to open that Source record and edit its Title.
But remember that any other Citation of that Source record will see the new Title too.

OR maybe you are trying to create a new Source record for the Marriage Citation?
In that case click the New... button at the bottom of the Select source... dialogue.
Often it is easier to start by creating the Source record, and then add the Citations.

If you are having problems maintaining consistent Source record Titles then I suggest you use Ancestral Sources to add most Source Citations because it has templates that ensure consistent Source Titles.

See how_to:index#beginners_guide|> FH Beginners Guide under Using and Recording Sources for more advice.
I am sure it is also covered in the book Getting the Most From Family Historian.

How can I remove a source that I no longer need please? I cannot see where or how to delete it. When the title is removed I am left with Untitled and I want to remove that unwanted source record title completely.
Thank you

If you really are talking about the Source record and not just Citations then this is what to do to delete any type of record:-
In the Records Window, select the tab for the type of record to be deleted.
i.e. Sources tab for Source records, Media tab for Media records, etc.
Find & select the desired record, then press the keyboard Delete key, or use Edit > Delete command.
But make sure its Links/Citations column is 0 otherwise some other record is still using this record.

If you need to delete several records then see how_to:delete_a_large_number_of_records|> Delete A Large Number of Records.

Forgive me, but why has this thread deviated from altering a Title for a Marriage Citation to deleting a Source record completely? Did you think that deleting the Title would delete the record?

BTW: This illustrates the power of the unique Record Id which is the primary key for every record (except Places). You can change anything in a record, including deleting every field, but the record will still exist with its Record Id. Since deleting a record is quite dangerous, a special technique is required.
