How to put DNA results into family historian

Post by barbaramac » 18 Aug 2016 04:45

Hi,
I have my results of DNA testing done through Ancestry.com, how do I put them into my Family Historian project?? Would someone mind setting out instruction please. Not sure if this is correct place to post this, my apologies if it is not.

Hi Barb, I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that seems a bit more appropriate.

I suspect you have NOT moved a project from Ancestry Family Tree Maker (FTM) into FH. Since FH V6.1 there should be a DNA fact ready and waiting in the Extended Set of Fact Sets. So in Tools > Fact Types select that Fact Set top left, and click Show Hidden on the right. Is DNA Markers (or similar) listed?

See the thread DNA results into FH and creating a "Book of Me" (13414) and follow the advice there about creating a custom fact if necessary, including asking again for advice about customising the Fact Type definition, adding a Source Citation if necessary, and using the fact in Reports.

Barb:

I have to confess that I was unaware of the DNA Marker fact mentioned by Mike but I imagine it was intended for storing results obtained by DNA tests which use a relatively small number of markers, such as Y-chromosome DNA tests.

The DNA tests currently marketed by ancestry.com are autosomal tests and are very different. Autosomal tests use several hundred thousand markers. When you say you want to load the results into FH I am not clear what you are intending. The results as such come as a very large zipped spreadsheet (about 5.7 MB in my case). It is simply a list of markers with the allele values at each marker. This link shows the first few lines of a typical result set
https://sites.google.com/site/wheatonsu ... n-to-atdna
and contains a warning about the length of a typical raw data set - 20,000 pages or more.

Clearly it would be inappropriate to incorporate such a list into the DNA marker fact in FH. You could incorporate a link to the file but I question how useful this would be.

If when you talk of your results you simply mean the list of username matches provided by ancestry, bear in mind that this is dynamic and tends to get added to daily. And until you have verified any given match genealogically, its inclusion on your match list is no more than a suggestion.
