Changing source to Method 1

Post by Gowermick » 16 Apr 2016 13:57

When I was an FTM user, I got used to having a 2-stage source e.g.Census 1851 + HO107 12345 F320 P40, and being a unique source, I could link it
a) to media image 1851 12345 F320 P40.jpg
b) and other people on same census page.

In moving to FH, the above was converted to one source Census 1851, with the second part HO107 12345 F320 P40 being moved to the citation, i.e Method 2, which means having having multiple copies of the same citation, with all the synchronising problems that entails keeping them all the same.

I have stuck with Method 2 so far, but now see the logic and benefits of moving to Method1.

With nearly 3000 citations for 1851 census alone, some means of changing them via a plugin seems the only option. Is there a plugin that could help me to move to Method1, (or one that could be modified) so that Source title for above would become Census 1851 HO107 12345 F320 P40 i.e Combine Source Title with wherewithsource

I'm sure I read a post on this subject, but now cannot locate it.

Any advice/guidance would be welcome

This might be the post you were thinking of:
Merging "Source" with its related "Where within Source" (13530)

It resulted in Mike writing a plugin which might do what you want.

Yes, that Plugin of mine may do the job. I cannot be sure whether it also migrates any Citation Media to the Source Media, but suspect that could easily be added.

You may also be thinking of Plugin to sort problems with FTM Imports (13157) where Barnowl posted his FTM_Fixer Plugin, although it has not been updated in the light of the recent FH V6.1 upgrade.

Several of the features that Plugin fixed are now handled by the FH V6.1 improved import from FTM.

Some other features are fixed by the Quick Fix Plugins mentioned in how_to:import_from_family_tree_maker|> Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM) but only to correct 'invalid' imported data.

BUT Method 2 Source Citations are not 'invalid', so the FTM_Fixer Plugin option for that conversion is very applicable.

Ensure you have at least taken a File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup before running that Plugin. Also you can reverse its changes by using Edit > Undo Plugin Updates before closing FH.

Lorna & Mike,
Thanks, that was the post I was thinking of.

Mike, media is not a problem, as I have yet to associate any media (census images for example ). I may start linking them once I have successfuly completed the conversion to method 1.

I'll keep you both posted on the outcome, especially if I edit the plugin for any reason.
