Location of Places on Maps

Post by blackbill » 09 Apr 2016 10:39

I have recently upgraded from FH v4 to v6.2. The maps window in v6 is new to me and all my places have been automatically geocoded. However I'm finding that a large number of my places (mainly in Scotland) are shown to be in USA. I have checked my PC location (which is UK) and in the map window preferences I have set "override default country code" to GB. I restarted my PC after this and reopened FH.
Is it because of the way I have entered the place names? In some cases I have entered only a village name. Does it need the county too?

Yes, the auto-geocoder will tend to match the most popular name world-wide even though you have set a GB preference. So, ensure you enter a significant Town, County and Country, but do not be too surprised if it only recognises the County or Country especially outside UK or USA.

The Map Life Facts Plugin can be synchronised with your Place records and often gives a better map location even down to street level in many cases, because it uses the Google Map geocoder.
