Italics, bold & underlining

Post by Robert Jacobs » 27 Mar 2016 13:46

Is it possible to use text attributes like italics, bold and underlining in notes and sentence templates?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Sorry, but that is not possible.
It is top of the Wish List at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/ that you can vote for.

The only workaround is to Save Report As > Word-Processor Document (RTF} and edit the fonts in a word-processor.

Thank you, Mike. It's a showstopper for me; I've got a lot of ship names and a few book titles that should be italicized. I'll vote, but I'll have to hold off on my final conversion (from TMG) until that's fixed.

Thanks again and all good wishes.

I spoke to Jane about this at last year's WDYTYA show, and was told that it's coming. Not being able to use text formatting is an absolute pain, as it means that I must keep separate copies of notes formatted as I would wish, with all the problems of dual updating. I am disappointed it didn't make it to V6.1.

The only problem with exporting a report to RTF format is the loss of image positioning in the report.

I've found one way around it by exporting to PDF and then opening up in LibreOffice. It treats the file as if it was something like desktop publishing format and allows you to bold words where required. The only downside is the fact that the sentences are split across "text boxes" so if you bold a word in one box, you tend to have to add some spaces to the next one or two to even out the paragraph or you get overlapping. Citation numbers at the end of sentences tend to be the most affected, although without right aligning of paragraphs, there is usually space at the end of the line to sort out the issue. However, with a bit of patience it's possible to get the display as required and then you can save it to the original PDF file with the added formatting. Fiddly yes, but better than nothing and to be honest probably slightly easier than trying to reposition all the images in a RTF file.

LibreOffice is free open source software.

Hopefully text formatting will appear at some point in an update, albeit its been on that Wish List for quite some time.

Any news about the date on which text formatting will be available in a new release or version upgrade? Even an encouraging rumor would be helpful.

This (including table formatting) has been my number one wish list item for 12 years now. I've expected it in every major version since and been very disappointed each time. So I'm not holding my breath :)

As a general rule Calico Pie do not release the new features of upgrades in advance.
However, Simon Orde has said that text formatting has been near the top of their list for some time.
I suggest you use + Contact Support at the bottom of that page and let them know your frustration and postponed usage of FH.

Thank you, Mike and Nick. I'm happy to see that I'm not the only user who needs these — by now standard, I should think — formatting features.

All good wishes.
