We need an additional plug in for the above as the ref id's are different to the standard ones for the UK; also there are no images for them on Ancestry or FMP so cannot save an image?

Hi, you don't need any additional plugins, as Ancestral sources will handle Scottish censuses with no problem. You can either a) create your own template for the census, or b) in the knowledge base/downloads there are some templates that have already been created. As for images, you don't have to attach an image, you can just bypass that step if you don't have one.

I suspect you are asking about the Ancestral Sources Census Templates, which are nothing to do with Family Historian Plugins, so I have moved this to the Ancestral Sources Forum.

Yes, you can get Scottish census images at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You have to buy credits to get the images (and to view the results of a basic search) but if you have already found the right household on Findmypast or Ancestry you should be able to go straight to the right record on Scotlandspeople, without wasting credits on unnecessary searches.

Tongue in cheek I shall put my great-grandfather's Scots bonnet on and point out that "the ref id's are different to the standard ones for the UK" isn't quite correct as Scotland is (still) part of the UK.

Slightly more seriously, there isn't a genuine standard format for census references across the UK, as they were carried out by different organisations and actually under different Acts of Parliament. Further the RG references that most of us use for the English & Welsh censuses were not used by the GRO (for England and Wales) but were only assigned by Kew when archiving the stuff. The GRO used the Enumeration District etc. which is actually the style of reference that you see in ScotlandsPeople, as it was the basis also for the GRO Scotland's referencing system. Whether there are any detail differences I don't know, but that is the closest to a UK standard.

The situation is confused even further by the fact that some of the online companies make a complete dog's breakfast of the Scottish referencing. How FMP did that given that they also wrote the current ScotlandsPeople site, I have no idea.

Thank you very much for putting me straight, now I've found the template download all should be well.
Adrian, FMP made a dogs breakfast of the search facility when they took over the site from the previous owners so it's hardly surprising that they messed up the census refs!
Neither Ancestry nor FMP have been designed for ft researchers but by designers who appear to know nothing about the research problems we encounter! Ancestry in particular seem clueless about UK counties and if in doubt put more than one for a town-must really complicate matters for people outside the UK!
