Snapshot files .fhss

Post by robacis » 20 Mar 2016 10:36

Since installing the latest FH version 6.1.4 I have noticed that a Snapshot folder has appeared in the FH data folder, which contains a number of...fhss files. Almost one for every day I have added to my database.
This files may be linked to the fact that images now appear next to the fact event. This is a very welcome improvement however as I have my database on a memory stick, these files will seemingly accumulate and significantly reduce the space on the stick.

I am reluctant to remove some of these files without knowing if problems might arise in doing so,

Could someone pleaes advise me whether it is safe to remove these files except the latest one
Thank you

Just adjust the settings in preferences to your required retention. Personally I would keep at least a couple.

See the What's new in Version 6.1 section on the FH website:
Family Historian can now automatically take and store daily snapshots of your entire data file, so that you can easily revert to an earlier version if you need to (this is in addition to full multi-level undo/redo within each session). By default, only the 8 most recent snaphots are kept, to ensure that space taken by snapshots never becomes excessive (this is configurable in Advanced settings, in Preferences). The new Snapshot Manager allows snapshots to be viewed or deleted – or reverted to. It can be accessed by clicking ‘Revert to Snapshot’ on the ‘Backup/Restore’ submenu of the File menu, or, in the Project Window, by selecting a project and clicking ‘More Tasks’, and then ‘Manage Snapshots’.

This feature provides additional security over and above the security offered by backups, but should not be viewed as in any way a substitute for regular backup

Snapshot files are unrelated to image icons appearing against facts.
That is due to the new View Media features.
If you click that button in Facts tab you will find tick options for Citation Media and Source Media.
Depending on which are ticked governs the image icons.
So if both are ticked then an image icon appears if there is a Fact Media or Citation Media or Source Media associated with that fact.
