1939 Register icons

Post by smol » 02 Mar 2016 16:34

I am a long time user of FH but not for the last few months.
I have version 6 and windows 10.
I have successfully added some 1939 register details using an Ancestral Sources template.
Then today I wanted to add an icon to the diagram for this data.
I downloaded an icon listed here on a forum but could not find the icon folder to put it in.
I have tried Program Data/ Calico Pie/ Family Historian/ Icons with no success
I found a message that suggested hidden files so tried File Explorer /View/and ticked hidden items
Again no success
I tried to find the correct pathway by going to a diagram, and clicking on edit an icon/ to select an icon
then I could see it also gave Program data etc but I could not move the downloaded file into the correct place.
That no longer gives me a suitable pathway.
I know there is a file with flags, text schemes, facts etc somewhere but cannot find it at all.
I have spent all afternoon trying to sort this out without success.
I hope you can follow all this, but please can anyone help

In my Windows 7 PC the folder is as follows:

Code: Select all

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons
NB: there is no space in "ProgramData".

Please click the User Control Panel link at top of this FHUG web page, and on its Profile tab enter your Family Historian Version 6 so it appears to the right of your postings, and you don't have to keep telling us.

Yes, the Icons folder is in the same path on Windows 10.
See glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder.

But just adding the icon will not make it magically appear in your Diagrams.

See how_to:using_flags_and_icons_and_expressions|> Using Flags and Icons and Expressions for methods of using Flags and Expressions to invoke Icons.

You could go through the fiddly process of creating a 1939 Register custom Flag in both AS and FH and adding a Flag Condition to Diagrams, but it is easier to just add an Expression Condition in Diagrams to detect %INDI.CENS[year=1939]% or similar.

Many thanks.
I think it was the space in ProgramData that was the problem plus I did a forward slash instead of backward.
Anyway all sorted now.
I do use the "fiddly" process but can now try the Expression Conditions.
Thanks to both of you.

Sorry I am afraid I need more help.
I now have the folder that holds the icons.
I cannot link the icons to the flags,
When I go to diagram/ options /box /record flag/icon /edit - I get file not found.
This is what comes from not having used the programme for some time, I have forgotten things plus the programme has moved on.
I have a feeling I have done something drastic, but do hope not.
I hope someone can sort me out.

So for the moment you are persisting with Record Flag Conditions?

You select Diagram Options > Boxes tab and Record Flag.
That lists your Census Flags as tabs on the lower pane.
I guess you select the Flag: 1939 UK Register tab, and click Edit Features button.

That displays the Box Features dialogue, and you tick Icon and click << Select button.

That displays the Select Icon dialogue with Look in: Icons at the top.
If Icons is not shown then navigate to C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons
That should list all the icon .bmp files in the Icons folder.

Where exactly in that sequence does FH say file not found?

Yes I am persisting with record flag conditions at the moment I thought I would try to sort this out first

Just had another go and hurrah it is all working ok.now.
I had being exactly as you said but when I clicked on the icon box underneath it said file not found.
When I went to select it gave me another file and I did not think to navigate down to the correct file.
Many many thanks for your time and patience it is much appreciated.
