Installing AS 5 on mac using Crossover

Post by philjo » 06 Feb 2016 17:24

I am using FH6 on my mac using Crossover in a win 7 bottle.
I have a separate xp bottle with AS version 3 installed which runs OK though I haven't used it for some time (I suspect I was still using FH4 at the time).

I have tried to install the latest version of AS 5 - I created a new win 7 bottle for this. It appears to install but nothing happens when I try to run it.

I am using Crossover 14.1.11 (updated today).
My mac is still running Lion so cannot upgrade to Crossover 15 until I update OSX.

A few queries - Should I try a different bottle type (e.g. win xp or win 8) ?
also does AS need to go into the same bottle as FH6 for interaction or separate bottles?
If I don't get any luck installing AS 5, is AS 3 still OK to run with FH6 ?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy, see how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover & Wine.

You must use the same Win7/8 bottle for both FH and AS otherwise they cannot share the FH Project files.
Using separate bottles is as if they were on separate PC.
I believe there is actually no significant difference between Win 7 and Win 8 bottles.
(Cannot use Win XP bottle because FH V6 does not support XP.)

BUT AS V5 does NOT work in Crossover 14 due to an old Wine bug that is belatedly fixed in Crossover 15.

AS V3 might work with FH V6, although many AS features would be missing, but my concern is with the new FH features such as Place records, Witnesses, and UNICODE UTF-16, so the chances are slim. Nick Walker may give more specific advice.

Mike,
thanks for your reply - that makes sense.
I intend to update my OSX as the latest versions of Lightroom and now crossover won't work on my current install.
I am waiting for Apple to release the lastest EL capitan update before I do that. (the beta is already out so shouldn't be too long) Then hopefully AS will work in Crossover 15.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I have Crossover v15 running fine on the current version of El Captitan (10.11.3). So I am unsure what your issue is.

Give us a few more details of what your issues are getting Crossover to run and we may be able to help you some more.

Colin, Jeremy said he is still running Lion which does not support Crossover 15, and says he is waiting for El Capitan 10.11.4 Beta to become a full release.

Mike

My question was WHY is he waiting for 10.11.4 before upgrading. There is no need to it runs fine on 10.11.3.

Valkrider,

I am holding back upgrading for other reasons.
Firstly there are some known issues in el capitan particularly regarding mail. also at present there is not a supported driver for my oldish HP printer in El cap - I understand this is resolvable in the next update using a generic driver though my model is included on the list that HP says are not supported in el cap using either Apple or HP derived drivers.
Also the El cap upgrade file is 6GB and will use up my most of my monthly broadband allowance! my connection is also very slow (BT copper cable ) so 6GB probably would take the best part of 2 days to download. (it took over 18 hours to download a 3GB file recently)
ANyway I am getting round the problem for now as I have got a copy of the Mountain lion update so will upgrade to that for now as Crossover 15 is supported to run on ML.

My OKI colour laser printer is not supported on El Capitan but runs fine with the old Mavericks drivers so it may be worth trying the older drivers anyway. I understand your problems with slow broadband. Good luck with the upgrade when you do it.

Thanks.

I have now updated to Mountain Lion and therefore was able to upgrade to Crossover 15.0.1 - FH6 still runs correctly.

I have tried to install AS 5 (32 bit as it won't let me install the 64bit version)
I think there is something else missing as it won't run after installation. I have checked the wiki. How do I tell if the Microsoft .NET Framework has been installed or not (& how to install it if it is not already there) - FH6 was installed in a new win 7 bottle some time ago so can't remember the details. Or is there any other Microsoft patch needed?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy, see how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover & Wine.

It would seem you have not checked that advice carefully, because you tried to install AS V5 64-bit, whereas the advice says use 32-bit and beforehand to tick Microsoft .NET Framework option in Crossover.

It might be better to start a new Win 7 bottle in Crossover 15.0.1 so compatible options are available.

Mike,

I tried creating a new bottle - there is no tick option regarding .net framework on creation.

Anyway, I just tried clicking on install Windows Application then typing .net framework - I selected .net framework 3 service pack 1 from the resulting selection list and installed that into the existing bottle. AS 5 now opens. So it looks like we now have success.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I don't have a Mac and Crossover, so rely on users like you and Colin Valkrider for feedback to update KB.
Maybe the settings for MS .NET Framework have changed in Crossover 15.
Colin has been involved for years, so advice about updating KB would be welcome from him.

Next week when I have a bit of time I will run through a new install of FH and AS under Crossover v15 and will update the KB if necessary.
