HI!

Jeff here. FH 6.0.4

27855 individuals / 8349 families

I am trying to figure how to approach trimming down my tree.
The points are:
1.
In many cases sibling married sibling within another Family.
i.e. john smith and mary smith of the same family marries
elizabeth jones and paul jones of the same family respectively.
2.
In several cases a first cousin marries a first cousin.

What i am trying to do is limit the lateral expansion of the tree,
as well as not taking it unnecessarily back to the time of Noah.

I dont see a report I could use to help find what relationships
are of this nature, so i could keep them (innerfamily or cousin marriages) intact.
How do I approach this task?
I have seen some of the mentioned relations in my tree,
but cant remember where they all are.

Maybe there is another way to look at this i havent thought of.....

Hi Jeff. I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that is more appropriate than the Research Forum.

It is not quite clear what your objectives are.
Are you talking about trimming your GEDCOM database so it holds fewer Individuals?
Or are you talking about trees displayed in Diagrams or families included in Reports?

To find the relationship between married couples you probably need a Family Query that focusses on Marriages, and use spouse 2nd relationship functions such as:

=Relationship(%FAM.HUSB>%,%FAM.WIFE>%,TEXT,2)
=RelationCode(%FAM.HUSB>%,%FAM.WIFE>%,GENS_UP,2)
=RelationCode(%FAM.HUSB>%,%FAM.WIFE>%,GENS_DOWN,2)

and sibling 2nd relationship functions such as:

=Relationship(%FAM.HUSB>FAMC>CHIL>%,%FAM.WIFE>FAMC>CHIL>%,TEXT,2)
=RelationCode(%FAM.HUSB>FAMC>CHIL>%,%FAM.WIFE>FAMC>CHIL>%,GENS_UP,2)
=RelationCode(%FAM.HUSB>FAMC>CHIL>%,%FAM.WIFE>FAMC>CHIL>%,GENS_DOWN,2)

Hi Mike!
Yes, trimming your GEDCOM database so it holds fewer Individuals is my aim.
just dont want to lose key sibling or first cousin marriages that may be connected to my direct lineage.

Hi Mike !
I looked thru the KB on creating a query,
i dont see a place to just cut and paste the queries you were kind enough to create.
as well, are we talking 1 whole query, or 2 separate queries?
if i cant cut and paste, to what sections do i add each variable?
The query is a little different than the TNG database one i have seen,
so I am quite new to this one.

OK, then look at using an All Relatives Diagram which includes all Spouses and Descendants of your direct Ancestors, but NOT more distant relatives.

Select all the boxes in the Diagram by using Ctrl-A and then Edit > Add to Named List. You now have a list of everyone to keep, and it is easy to create a Query that lists everyone not in that Named List using Exclude if =IsInList() function.

Im starting to translate what you shared with what and where i need to fill in...
I am stuck on such things as ==> TEXT,2 and GENS_DOWN,2.
Where or how do i input that?

ok, i see with the query you now provided,
i have a relative list!

1. can the exclude be used to exclude "12th cousins" etc.?
2. can i use the query directly to delete persons in the gedcom?

Functions such as =Relationship(...) you enter as an Expression on the Columns tab of the Family Query. It must be a Query Type of Family for the %FAM...% Data Refs to work.

1. To exclude distant relatives such as "12th cousins" do not select them (by hiding them) in the All Relatives Diagram as explained in how_to:create_an_export_gedcom_based_on_a_diagram|> Create an export Gedcom based on a diagram (How To). So only the records you want to keep are displayed and get selected.

2. To delete multiple records they must be copied to a Named List. So with a Query listing all those Individuals, use the Query Menu cog and Add Row Records to Named List, then in the Records Window display the Named Lists (List > Named Lists Pane), right-click the Named List and choose Delete Listed Records.

It might be wise to use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup before you start, just in case things go wrong!!!
