Census Scotland

Post by Puffin » 13 Jul 2015 14:15

Hello I am very new here so please be patient with very basic questions. I'm exploring the use of AS to input data for a one place study as well as family history but the former in particular.

I see that there has been some discussion on separating UK censuses into England and Wales, and Scotland (and presumably Ireland?). Is this happening/likely to happen? Related - if I change the Ref ID for a census to match Scottish format am I right in thinking the English/Welsh format is retained for when I need to use that?

Welcome to the FHUG.
Yes all that is available now.

AS is template driven, and comes with some Census and other templates installed.
But users can modify existing templates and add new ones.
Essentially each country and each year has a separate template.
BTW: There are virtually no Irish Census records.

Here is a list of topics for you to follow up:
  • Check the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources > User Guide with tutorials including Working With Templates plus the Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin.
  • Check fhugdownloads:ancestralsources|> Downloads and Links ~ Ancestral Sources which includes Ancestral Sources Template ~ Census Scotland 1841-1911.
  • Check how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers which leads on to many related topics including Sources Methods 1 & 2 as used in AS.
  • Check the Lookup Missing Census Facts Plugin.
If anything is still not clear then please ask.

Thanks.

Trying to save the Scottish templates but I'm being asked if I want to replace the current Settings file (don't seem to have a folder - see attachment). Very reluctant to do that unless I know it is right.

Only too aware of the lack of Irish censuses. But really benefitting from all the help videos and text available here.

Woh!! NEVER, EVER, touch anything in Program Files!
That is where programs are installed and should never need changing.
As you have discovered there is no \Ancestral Sources\Settings\ folder there anyway.

By default, in your personal My Documents folder, there is an Ancestral Sources folder.
This holds the Backups, Logs, and Settings folders that match the AS Tools > Options > General settings > Folders.
That is where to download the templates.

Do familiarise yourself with the AS Help pages.
