Post by barbaramac » 06 Jul 2015 11:14

I use a mac(Yosemite ) to do my searching, then email any photos/certificates etc I want to include in my FH program (v6.0.4), which I run on a windows 8.1, have done this for a few years but now I can't find where the photos are being put, I found the last photo I emailed yesterday in the Photos, which is in the pictures library, but can't select it to add to FH.
any suggestions please?

First, could you say how you are running Windows & Family Historian. Is it on your Mac (via Bootcamp or in a Virtual Machine) or on a separate PC?

Barbara, I've move this to General Usage as it it is nothing to do with Importing and Exporting to another genealogy product. You don't exactly explain why you cannot select your photo. When posting questions please be more explicit about what you tried and why it does not work.

Exactly what command are you using to add your photo?
Are you using the Add > Pictures main menu command?
(Do NOT use Add > Document or OLE Object or Other Multimedia.)
Are you using the Multimedia tab of a Property Box and clicking Add Media > Insert From File?

Either way, you will get an Insert pictures or Insert pictures or other media popup window.
You should then navigate to the Libraries > Pictures folder and locate your saved photo.
You might have to navigate to a sub-folder depending on exactly where you saved it from the Email.
It is possible that your photo file is using an unusual file type, in which case, in the lower right corner of the popup window, where it says Image Files (*.BMP, *.GIF, etc...) select All files (*.*) and your photo should be revealed.

I think the key to this may be: "What process do you go through when you receive an incoming e-mail on your PC with an image attachment?"

Presumably you are saving the image attachments to your PC, but where are you saving them to?

"using multimedia tab In Property box, add media , insert from file" opens the Insert pictures or other media window pointing to the last used folder by FH, which when first starting FH in my case usually reverts to my backup folder on a USB drive. There's a wish list item about this, asking for it to remember that last "data" folder used.

From the Insert pictures or other media window you will need to navigate to find the picture, which could be anywhere on your disk drive(s). I always put any pictures (or other multimedia) into my FH Project Media folder(s) before linking them to anything in FH. My FH Media Folders are structured to help me find things again more easily.

Lots of different ways of organising the folders, whatever works best for you.

Barbara said she "can' t see pictures or photos listed".
In the Insert pictures or other media window you should find Pictures in the left-hand Navigation pane.

It may be that another folder has sub-folders expanded and Pictures is not visible because it is scrolled off the pane.
So either collapse those sub-folders by clicking on their dark triangles, or scroll that left-hand pane up or down to reveal Pictures.

Alternatively, the This PC entry may be collapsed, so expand it by clicking its white triangle to reveal Pictures.

In other words, you should find your Pictures folder and the Photos in the same place you found them after saving them from your Email.

It is interesting that you originally mentioned the Pictures library, because by default Win 8.1 does not show libraries, unless you enable them via File Explorer > View > Navigation pane > Show libraries.

Barb, I get the impression that you are struggling with navigating around folders and files on your PC.

The process of reorganising your FH photos into Media sub-folders is quite tricky, and requires a good understanding of how to use the Windows 8.1 File Explorer to create new folders and move files, and the FH Tools > External File Links options to adjust FH to match. If you get it wrong then all your photos will become invisible to FH.

With that in mind I suggest you stick with the one Media folder in FH.
If you only have a few hundred photos then that will work just fine.
