Custom reports

I created a custom report by opening one of the standard ones, making my changes and then saving report as "custom report type". I am doing this for my website and have got all the facts etc listed that I wish. With some census entries, the address is very close to the census fact. I have identified the styles used for each of these - "section data" and "subsection data" and have seen on another thread that I may be able to adjust the .fhr file for my custom report to adjust the line spacing slightly so it doesn't appear as crowded.

However, for this new custom report that I have made, it hasn't created a .fhr file anywhere on my computer. It appears to just be a template in Family Historian? What can I do to create this template so that I am able to edit the line spacing?

There are two very different ways of using Reports in the Create a Website Wizard.

Step 3 - Choose Report Template
The Report Template(s) chosen here are used to create the HTML featured pages for each Family/Individual and have hyperlinks between Individuals and references.

Step 4 - Add Items for Table of Contents
The Report Types chosen here become standalone web pages for the Individuals/Families chosen.

To get a good idea of what either of these pages will look like, Publish your custom Report Type and use Save Report As > Web Page (HTML) to review the HTML page in your browser. The layout will be somewhat different to the FH screen, and PDF reports.

Thank you - it does certainly look better once published.

I still don't know where the saved custom report is though - do you know if FH6 save custom reports somewhere differently now?

They are still saved as before in the glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder along with many other customised settings, but the folder may be 'hidden'.

I've found all my other custom reports which I've used before in Version 5, but the two that I have created in version 6 do not exist at all on my computer, anywhere. I have tried searching for all .fhr files and for the filename itself but there is nothing on my computer for it. It does, however, recognise it as a custom report in FH...

As indicated in the link from Mike's post, on my Windows 8.1 the Custom reports I have created can be found in c:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Reports\Custom with a file name matching the report name displayed in the menu within FH (and an extension of .fhr). I seem to recall though that \ProgramData is defined as a "hidden" folder, so would need to be "unhidden" to appear is searches.

I have found the "Custom" folder and I can see all of my other custom reports - just not the 2 most recent ones. The only difference is that the 2 most recent have been made in FH6 - everything else, to my knowledge, has been the same.

What version of Windows are you using (Win 8, 7, Vista)?

What is the full path where you found the Custom folder?
e.g. C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Reports\Custom\

Every Report type listed in Publish > Custom Reports MUST be in that folder!

I am running Windows 7.
The path is as follows:

c:\Users\Public\Family Historian\Reports\Custom

I have two other, different paths from where they have been backed up (but as explained before, searching '*.fhr' on the whole computer brought up nothing and hidden files are set to be shown). I thought it must have had to save it in that folder but it hasn't - it's as if it's part of Family Historian and hasn't saved the file separately.

That is NOT a standard Win 8 or Win 7 or Vista folder, and is NOT used by FH, which explains why it is NOT updated by FH V6.

Has it possibly been derived from a migration from Windows XP?

Two of us have now repeated what is also stated in the [kb]|[/kb] I referred to above, that the customisations folder on Win 8 & Win 7 & Vista is:
C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Reports\Custom\

If you look there, you WILL find those .fhr files.

If you just do a file search, then often only indexed locations will be searched, and that may exclude the folder identified above. I have just run a file search and the above folder is NOT listed even though it contains .fhr files.

Thank you to both of you for your help - I had been to what I thought was the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie folder but somehow I must have had a "Friday afternoon moment". The explanation of the search issues also makes sense - I should have known better!

For searching a windows PC I highly recommend "Search Everything" for Voidtools

It's fast and it does search everywhere, unlike the Windows search.

Possibly straying off-topic a bit, sorry.

I think it is worth pointing out that (at least in Windows 7) the Windows Search facility is a front end to the indexing service which is essential to the functioning of the Libraries in Explorer. If you want to regularly search the content of files then the simplest way is to add folders to a suitable library or create a new one - I have a genealogy library which gathers all the data folders that I know contain genealogy data.

Everything search is different in that it searches only for file and folder names, and not content, hence the speed.

An alternative half way house, but somewhat slower is the Nirsoft utility 'Search My Files' which does search content if required. I use it to search my external backup drives for content as I do not wish Windows search to index them.
