* Ancestry trees ~ new to FH V6

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Ancestry trees ~ new to FH V6

Post by Mistytor » 20 Jan 2015 09:07

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I've just bought V6 though I haven't actually loaded it yet. What I would like to know is, will I be able to send the family tree I have built up in Ancestry straight to FH ? I really don't understand Gedcom or what to do with it so don't want to start fiddling around and probably ruin something. Answers for Dummies please.

Mistytor, it is difficult to answer your question without knowing whether you are just starting out using FH V6 and have no database yet, or whether you already have established a large FH database and just upgrading from FH V5 to V6.

It sounds like you are just starting out with FH V6.

So the first thing to do is become familiar with FH so I suggest you start with how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and progress through the guides and tutorials using the Family Historian Sample Project.

That way you will learn about the features of FH and find your way around our [kb]|[/kb] without any risk to your family data.

Then when it comes to migrating your tree from Ancestry, yes using a Gedcom file, you will be more comfortable with the process.

Mistytor, if you search through the forum you will note that syncing with other trees, especially with Ancestry trees, is "troublesome". I find the easiest is to keep your master database in one place (for me FH) then if you need to, export the "best fit" Gedcom file to other trees.

If you want to use FH as your Master (in my opinion much better in so many ways to the online Ancestry trees), you can export your data from Ancestry trees in a Gedcom file and import to FH see how_to:import_from_ancestry|> Import from Ancestry website. I'm not sure if all the data will transfer, it probably depends what kind of data you have.

But also read Mike's link first.
