V5 to V6 - Diagram/Report customisation settings issue

Post by NickiP » 18 Jan 2015 10:23

Having just installed V6 trial over the top of a licensed V5, I have noticed that some of my customisation settings have disappeared completely. I can't see anything in any of the Knowledge Base Articles to suggest I needed to do anything differently but am happy to be shown otherwise. ;)

Diagram Options - Edit Text Schema - Edit Text Scheme Item

All text reverted to left alignment, when I have previously had them all set to centre alignment under V5.

Narrative Reports - applies to all narrative reports

Report Options - Main - Generations

Reset to default of 3 generations when previously had been increased.

Report Options - Pictures

Inc. Year of picture, Inc. Individual's Age at Picture Date, and Inc. Picture Title were all reset to selected when I had previously deselected them.

Report Options - Page Layout

Header and Footer details had been reset to default when previously I had customised both.

I was under the impression, perhaps wrongly, that with an upgrade all customisations would have been retained. As far as I can see others have been.

More often than not, customisations are preserved during installation upgrades, but all the Standard Diagrams, Text Schemes, and Reports are more vunerable. It is better to create Custom versions of your customisations.

There is a warning in how_to:about#how_to_upgrade|> About Family Historian > How To Upgrade but it perhaps needs to been repeated in the how_to:reinstall_family_historian|> Family Historian Installation Advice.

I hope you took full backups of all your Projects and Customisations and Preferences in V5 before installing V6 trial. Otherwise, if you don't purchase a licence before the 30 days expires, and you reinstall V5, there will be potential issues reverting back to your original setup.

Thanks again Mike, I may have missed that bit in the How to Upgrade details.

I've an old backup of the customisations which should include most of the changes. Thankfully I knew where they were anyway.

I probably will upgrade to V6 since the Media Gallery and enhanced filter facility on the Individuals Records Index are worth the upgrade cost as so much better. :) I like the idea of the mapping facility but, as has already been raised on FHUG Forums already, its not too good for large places. With a lot of London ancestors, when I tested it last night it was putting places in the completely wrong part of London. It may be down to how I've got my Places configured, as they were imported from FTM, but for now I shall probably just not bother using it.
