v6 Bug? Latitude and Longitude preferences inconsistent

Post by paultt » 21 Dec 2014 15:56

Under Tools -> Preferences -> General, my latitude and Longitude Format is set to Numeric from the dropdown. Apply, then OK.

In Places, select a place record. Right Click and select Add lat/Long. Select the ... at the end of the input field to pop-up the input window.
Input format defaults as Deg-Min-Sec and has to be changed to Numeric for each and every entry.

or

Tools -> Work with Data -> Places, select a record, and then Edit. In the Latitude Longitude input box, Select the ... at the end of the input field to pop-up the input window.
Input format defaults as Deg-Min-Sec and has to be changed to Numeric for each and every entry.

I have approx 2000 places where I have a record of the lat/longs in numeric format, that I wish to capture, as I know they are accurate.

The Preferences option, as explained in the Help, is setting the display format.

You can enter the Lat/Longitude field in any format without using the [...] edit feature.
Just copy & paste your numeric values directly into the Lat/Longitude box.

A similar concept applies to Date fields, where you can enter in any acceptable format.

The only minor issue I perceive, is that if a Place Record is open when the Preference is changed, then its Lat/Longitude field does not adopt the new format until the Property Box is closed & re-opened.

Ok, maybe there is another bug -
I cannot copy the latitude data from a text file and paste it, add the comma and then copy the longitude data from the same text file and paste that. ie concatenating the data into the field by two pastes. It will not accept an incomplete lat/long pair, and throws it away. I have to use the pop-up edit box in numeric format, as that is the format of my data. Or, I will have to write a script to modify my text data to the lat, long format prior to copy and paste.
Is there an input preference field that I have not set, to allow numeric input by default in the pop up edit boxes, which is two fields, rather than the six by the DMS format?

No, there does not seem to be an option for that.

However, here are some other ideas.
  • FH does not require the comma separator on entry, so if your Latidtude and Longitude are just separated by spaces then copy & paste them like that, and FH automatically inserts the comma between them.
  • Alternatively, enter 0, 0 into the field first, then copy & paste the Latitude and Longitude values over each 0 in turn.
  • Write a Plugin to transfer the values.
