Gedcom is Massive

Post by DerekAth » 16 Dec 2014 17:06

Since I upgraded to FH6, on saving my gedcom it is now 58.6MB!

I only learned it was this big when I tried to update my TNG website - and it couldn't cope - it also deleted all the names off my TNG site.

I have of course still got all my information in FH6, but how do I reduce the size of my gedcom - no media is included in this 58MB - to get my name back on TNG?

Help (again)!

GEDCOM files in FH V6 are stored in Unicode UTF-16 encoding that requires two bytes per character instead of one, so that doubles the GEDCOM size.

In addition every distinct Place name has an associated Place Record that adds even more.

The TNG solution is to use the Export Gedcom File Plugin, which has a specific option for TNG, because I knew this problem would arise.

Is it possible for someone to talk me through the actions?

I have the plugin installed, but am unclear on the way forward?

Use Tools > Plugins select the Export Gedcom File Plugin.
If you expect to run it often then click More >> and tick Add to Tools Menu.
Then click Run or next time use Tools > Export Gedcom File.

You could try clicking the Help & Advice button where it is all explained.

Basically, choose the Gedcom export mode droplist option for (TNG) The Next Generation.
Click the Export GEDCOM & Media files... button.
When complete the Plugin offers Windows Explorer to open the Export folder.
In that folder is the <Project> TNG ISO.ged file to transfer to TNG with all the media files.

If you prefer UTF-8 encoding, or alternative Multimedia options, then choose them before exporting the GEDCOM.

Mike,

The plugin worked well - many thanks. Not easy for a dinasaur like to me sort, but was pointed in the right direction.

I can understand now how the size of the programe has increased - not least the geocodes which is a brilliant addition.

Again, many thanks.
