Split Tree Helper - Multimedia Files

Post by rt » 23 Sep 2014 08:29

I keep some of my multimedia files (census & certificate images etc) outside of the FH project structure. Tailored (mainly cropped) images of people are within the project structure, along with the gedcom.

The result is my single collection of certificate & census images are shared across multiple FH projects (e.g. a "family" project and a "place" project).

If I use split tree helper and tick either of the options to delete multimedia or source records, do both operate solely on the gedcom, or does either also delete the referenced multimedia image (which in my case risks deleting my single shared copy of a certificate or census image)?

Thanks in anticipation,
Dave.

The Split Tree Helper will only operate on the gedcom, it will not delete any image files. Bear in mind that when using the Split Tree Helper you have to start by making a copy of your file and then delete everything from the copy that you don't want. The copy then becomes the split-off tree, and your original files (gedcom and multimedia) are unchanged.

If it is only a gedcom you want, without any multimedia at all, alternative method is to use File > Import/Export > Export > Gedcom file. This allows you to export a gedcom from your existing file without first having to make a copy to work on.
Whichever method you use, your original gedcom file and image files will remain intact.

What is the target destination for your split & pruned GEDCOM?

If it is another genealogy program, then have a look at the Plugin Export Gedcom File, which also does not need an initial copy to be taken.

It also allows the Multimedia Records to be removed (not the files) and adapts the exported GEDCOM for various genealogy programs.
