Problems adding a plugin to Tools Menu

Post by carlineric » 15 Aug 2014 09:15

Hi

Having a problem making some plugins stay on the tools menu after exiting and restarting Family Historian. After the restart I get a "Plugin Not Found" message, this does not happen after I add the plugin to the tools menu and prior to the restart. The procedure I have been using is

Tools Menu - Plugins
More>> - Click "Add to Tools Menu"
Close

Tools Menu - run plug in - runs OK

Save the project and exit

Restart

Tools Menu - run plug in - "Plugin Not Found"

This does not affect all plugins, the ones I am having a problem with are

Ancestral Source Data Entry
Clone Any Record
Lookup Missing Census Facts
Notes List for Individual
Search and Replace
Sources List for Individual

For example "Change Any Fact Tag" and "Find Duplicate Citations" stick to the tools menu after a restart. To make sure that I had not altered a setting I reinstalled Family Historian after renaming the Calico Pie folder in ProgramData. The problem remained after the reinstall.

I've never had a problem myself, I can only think it might be something to do with Windows authorities. For anyone else looking at this they might want info like which version of windows, are you running as an administrator.

Details of Windows version may be useful.
Double check you have FH V5.0.9 installed.
When the Plugin Not Found messages occurs, if you open the Tools > Plugins window is the offending Plugin listed there, and will it Run from there, and is its Add to Tools Menu box ticked???

Also, is the offending Plugin listed in the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugins\ folder?
( C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugins\ on XP )

Windows Version - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit service pack 1

Version 5.09 is installed

After the message the plugin is still listed in the Tools>Plugins window and runs but the Add To Tools box is not ticked

The plugin is listed in the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugins\ folder

I have tried running Family Historian as administrator but it did not help.

It only seems to affect some versions (later?) of a plugin. For example I have tried an earlier version of Ancestral Source Data Entry (3.3) which attaches OK but the most recent does not.

My set-up is similar (except it is W7 Home Premium) and have never seen that problem.

I presume you have a backup archive of Plugins that allows you to revert to earlier versions.

The Plugin Tools Menu settings are stored in:
C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\General\Plugins.fhdata
It is a plain text file you can examine with a plain text editor such as Notepad.
It simply lists the Tools menu of Plugins and is updated immediately you change the Add to Tools Menu tick box:

Code: Select all

[Header]
Ver1=1
Ver2=0
Count=3
[Plugin1]
Name=Place Summary Report
ToolsMenu=1
[Plugin2]
Name=Timeline Chart
ToolsMenu=1
[Plugin3]
Name=UDF List
ToolsMenu=1
I suspect something must be upsetting this file after FH is closed.
Is it perhaps synchronised with another PC simultaneously running FH?

Argh simple solution. What I had not noticed was when I had downloaded the plugins there was already a downloaded plugin of that name in the downloads directory and Chrome had renamed the new download as filename (n).fh_lua. Deleting the old download and renaming the new one without the (n) cured the problem.

Yes, that is an annoying recurrent problem that we have all suffered from time to time.
