Problems browsing for files

Post by suey » 15 Jul 2014 16:51

Hi, I have installed FH (5.09) on two very similar Windows 7 Pro 64bit PCs. One PC I had it working fine, but when I wanted to switch to another I get a very strange problem when browsing for files. As you will see from my attachment the Browse dialog is basically a grey box and it is impossible to actually browse to a file at all. If I paste the filepath into the filename field and click "Open" nothing happens either.(screenshot 1)

The configuration of both PCs is nearly identical and I am an admin on both. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling and also have tried running the install files as an Administrator to see if this would help, but it was not successful. I also had an error on one install (screenshot 2)

If anyone has any advice as to how to get this working properly I would be very grateful indeed :)

Thanks in advance

Is it fair to assume that the install which gave you the error is the one which is causing the problem?

Googling LastCP.. - which I assume you have done - does not produce any definitive solution to the problem nor even any great number of hits. One suggestion that seemed to work for one individual was to selectively turn off Data Execution Prevention by creating an exception for the installer that caused the problem, Another suggestion was to turn off Anti-Virus protection while installing. It is not clear what the phrase LastCP is 'RF' means. Perhaps some of the developers on these forums could help with that.

Problems with windows dialogues is sometimes caused by add on Windows exploerer extensions, if you boot in safe mode and try the prompt does it work OK?

A similar error message has been reported before: see Access Violation - Cannot enter marriage dates

I notice the Project Window screenshot lists the Family Historian Sample Project which I assume opens OK.
If so, try using some of the other file browse windows to see if they exhibit the same problem.
e.g.
Try command File > Gedcom File Tasks > Open Gedcom File.
Try command Add > Document or Add > Pictures, etc.
In a Property Box on the Multimedia tab try Add Media > Insert From File.
In a Report use Save Report As > Text File, etc.

If the Family Historian Sample Project will not open then I suspect there is something faulty with the default Location: My Documents\Family Historian Projects.
Try clicking on that Location: blue link and choosing Reset Location to Installation Default.
In Windows Explorer check you have normal read/write access to that Family Historian Projects folder.
