Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not shown
Dear all,
When entering a marriage in the Parents Tab - I seem to have a problem selecting from the list at the top (select button is greyed out) when I am trying to select a parent for the bride and the system has already selected the grooms parents and displayed their names. I have already entered the marriage for the brides parents so their names should also display (I think) and at one stage I could display the brides mother and not the bride's father. Now I can't get either.
The auto / text button gives the following: (Note: it has not been saved yet)
Name, Surname, and Rank or Profession of Father. Name and Maiden Surname of Mother.
William Watson, Bootmaker
<No Name>, Cooper
I am hoping it is me doing something silly.

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
The entries on the Parents tab are not entered by using the <<Select button.
They are completed automatically using relationships in your FH database.
Checkout the AS Help page on this feature.
You can edit the name of any parent, just to match the Certificate, but it will still refer to the same Record Id.
The blue Reset link will restore the original entry.
If any Parent is not in your FH data then use the Add Spouse or Add Parent buttons as necessary.
If you have only just entered the Marriage of the Brides parents, then have you linked them to the Bride as Parents?
BTW:
Please use the User Control Panel at the top of this FHUG page, and then the Profile tab to set your Family Historian version, so that it displays in the panel to the right of your postings. This will help us help you.

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
Thanks for getting back so quickly.
I am sorry but I don't know what is meant by "have you linked them to the Bride as Parents?"
I meant I entered a marriage certificate for the brides parents and thought that as it was 'her parents' that would be the 'link' ?
Thanks in advance.
Anne

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
It depends on exactly how you entered the Marriage details for the Brides Parents and whether a family relationship already existed.
In AS on the Main Info tab click on the Spouse ID field to display her details on the right.
Are either or both her parents listed in the Parents box halfway down the right-hand side?
Similarly, in FH display her in the Focus Window and check both her parents are shown above her.
If both exist then the Reset on the AS Parents tab should display them.
Otherwise you need to correct the Family relationships in FH.

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
Thanks Mike
I need to abandon this entry and go back to FH, I think. There are no parents listed in the box for parents on the RH side. In FH I have tried clicking on a daughter of these parents and while it identifies her husband the chart shows no parents.
I know what you mean by link now and some linking needs to be done then I will attempt to do it again from scratch.
Another query - can we see where FH stores the extra folk it makes when we delete or change the details of a member of our family? My individuals (Quantity in the database ) are not keeping pace with the numbering of the individuals and I would like to investigate it in case there is another issue.
Many thanks - Anne

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
Anne, please set your FHUG Profile as requested in my first reply.
In FH if you delete a Record then its Id number is discarded and not reallocated to new Records.
So the quantity of Records is less than the largest Record Id.
This is perfectly normal and needs no action.
Alternatively, if a Record is simply unlinked then it may become an unrelated orphan in pool of its own.
Use the standard query Search For Orphans to find them.

Sorry Mike, Earlier I did not notice the Control Panel thing and tried now, forgot my password, but when I try to retrieve it - I am getting a 404 error and can't complete this task as a result - will try again later.
Thanks for everything - Anne

I don't understand why you need your password.
You can post messages and see the User Control Panel link.
So you are already logged in and can edit Profile without needing password again.

Re: Marriages - Greyed out <Select> button or parents not sh
Thanks Mike - I have cracked the profile thingy - I was trying to make it complicated!
I think I understand what I have done wrongly in FH and AS. I have 3 sisters marrying 2 brothers and the boy's uncle. All the males have the same forenames and surnames and occupations and in the girls names and mothers names are very similar and easy to mix up and after careful looking - I have duplicated the girls mother and one mother has 3 daughters which is correct and the other has one. The marriage is against the entry with the one daughter (it would be) and I would like to switch the marriage to the one with the three daughters and delete the mother with one daughter (after detaching the daughter from wife before the deletion.)
Can that be done or do I need to delete pretty much this whole family and start again with them?
It has become a much bigger question.
Thanks again, Anne

Mike - in FH I take it I could 'Add source' and select the Source and add it and then proceed from there - Perhaps deleting the source from the wrong one would be best first before adding - Anne

No, just use the FH Merge records feature to merge the mothers and daughters and Family records.
