Re: Version 5 family historian and Windows 8.1
I have moved this thread to the General Usage Forum as it seems to be nothing to do with Plugins.
I am not aware of any problems reported with Windows 8.1

The problem I have with family historian must have been caused when I downloaded a plugin. When I switched my family historian on and got to my family tree it wouldn't let me on as it said "if you want to insert a picture please select insert menu or go to back up or restore So I decided to go to restore As all my media. names etc had seem to be gone.
I did the procedure of downloading the restore/back up feature and got all the information back However it wouldn't let me save the family tree or any of the information attached to it. as it said that I couldn't save it as the backup/restore had not been created by Family historian. So I saved it on to custom diagrams.
So when I switch family historian on I have to restore it and find the root person every time I want to see my family tree So can anyone explain to me what has gone wrong? I recently upgraded my computer to windows 8:1 so it was either my upgrade or downloading a plugin caused all my information to be wiped off.

I doubt it was a plugin, none of them delete Projects to my knowledge.
It sounds like you have just been trying to open a backup file directly rather than restoring it.
Did you have a Project file originally, if so try doing a windows file search for it. The most common reason for this sort of problem is people accidentally moving the Project folder so if you do a search you should be able to find where you put it,

It will help us to help you if you could give precise details of the exact commands you use, and the messages FH gives.
While updating to Windows 8.1 have you changed your Windows user/account name, or re-installed FH?
If you open FH and use File > Project Window, what is listed under Family Historian Projects and what is shown in blue against Location?
Do you store your Projects in the default folder ...\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\ or somewhere else such as your Sky/OneDrive folder or Dropbox folder?
Exactly what commands are you using to restore your backups, and are they Small, Medium or Full backups?
There are several questions there, so please answer as many as possible.
