I am off on a Genealogy Cruise in a few weeks and wanted a tee shirt to wear with my research surnames on. So I hit upon the idea of creating a word cloud. I found a web site called "Wordle" which created lovely looking word clouds, so I wrote a quick plugin to call it with the surname counts for a selection of people from my tree.

It's easy to run, just select either everyone in your tree or the ancestors of a single person and then click on Launch Wordle, you will need to allow the Java App to run to see the results.

Wow what a brilliant idea. I'm not one for logo T shirts but I had been thinking of how to do something different for the covers of my folders / books of the various branches of my tree.

I wonder if it is possible not to include names in [square brackets]. I still put spouses without surnames under the surname of the family name in [square brackets] . Or is there a better way of recording them now? I think it was a suggestion of yours many years / versions ago, to record them that way.

Thanks, Jane, but ...
First attempt gave an error message. This was easily fixed by an extra line, to exclude blank surnames, in the for loop starting at line 17.

I have made a couple of changes one for the blank surname and one to check for all of (,{,[ as the first character of a surname and to skip them. It already did round brackets which is what I use.

When I go to the Wordle website I get this warning message:
Wordle warning.JPG
Wordle warning.JPG (15.75 KiB) Viewed 10971 times
Is it safe? (I realise it is not referring to Jane's plugin but to something in Wordle itself).

I presume it's your anti-virus doing that, I would check on the Av site. I can only say it's not caused me any problems.

Jane

It is Firefox that says there is a security vulnerability in the toolkit that Wordle use not the local AV programme.

I have tried to run it and get this error message when I try more than 1 surname

Any thoughts?

Not seen any errors like that, it looks like a Wordle error rather than the plugin.

If you type the names in on the advanced page do you get the same error, if so it might be your Java version?

Hi Jane

I tried the modified plugin but it still publishes the square brackets. I downloaded the modified plugin from your first post again, or should I have gone somewhere else?

[As of 14:34] Jane's modified plugin not available via original link.

I got the same error message as Colin [Valkrider, above] when blank surname(s) included in list. If this is the same issue, you can merely delete the relevant line from ...\Family Historian Projects\{project}\{project}.fh_data\Plugin Data\Wordle Surname List.html and then reload that file in your browser.

Jane

Is there a way to see the output file before sending it to Wordle to see if there is an issue with the file?

I have created my list using GedXlate and Excel and then just pasting it in and that worked fine so I suspect there is something odd in my Gedcom.

Thanks to Peter's comments I found where it stores the output and like him the problem is where the surname is unknown I had just :55 in the html. Ran the script with that line and got the error message. Removed the line and it runs fine.

Little tweak to the plugin required?

No mine is not the same issue. I don't have any blank surnames. I use the the family name of the person they are attached to within Square brackets until I find their missing surname. That way instead of having say a dozen Marys who you cannot see who they are attached to, you can see a name within brackets. Which you then know is not their name but the name of the person/family they are attached to.

So my word cloud plugin is working ok, except that it displays names within brackets.

Unfortunately, despite saying it had been updated, the Plugin link at the top still refers to a Version that only removes names starting with '(' parentheses.
If you are prepared to edit the Plugin, then change line 19 to:

Code: Select all

        local strFirst = strSurname:sub(1,1)
        if bExcludeBrackets and ( strSurname == '' or strFirst == '(' or strFirst == '[' or strFirst == '{' ) then
Another minor fix is needed to prevent Wordle being invoked if the resultant list of names is empty.
