Scottish names & d'Aboville Numbers

Post by mezentia » 19 Dec 2013 19:57

I'm working on a tree where there's a large number of Scots whose names have various prefixes and suffixes. For example:

Sir Alexander, I of Ardloch
James of Keppan and Kildonan
Sir Roderick "Tutor of Kintail"

Simple question, how do I get these to display on a chart? I'm using the Title field for "Sir", or "Lord", and the Name Suffix for the "I of Ardloch", etc.

Sorted! Name format = Adorned (Full)

Simples

Tsk!

Now to get the ahnetafel numbers to work on the diagram. Root's ok, rest don't display :?

Did you notice that there is an Ahnentafel Number item predefined for Text Schemes?

Simply insert it into your customised Text Scheme via the Edit Text Scheme window.

BTW Regarding Names, Title is NOT a Name field - it is an Attribute Fact, and I don't think it is included in %INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL%.

I think you might find you need to use the name Prefix for "Sir", "Lord" etc, rather than the Title field. The Adorned Name includes Prefix and Suffix but not Title, as far as I know.

(Edit: Mike's reply, saying the same, arrived as I was typing mine.)

There is a difference: someone's name Prefix might be Sir or Lord, as in Sir John Smith or Lord Bloggs, but his Title might be 3rd Baronet of Somewhere, or 10th Earl/Duke of Anytown.

You could of course also include Title in the Text Scheme as a separate item, just below the Adorned Name.

Thanks, Prefix and suffix it is then :D

As for ahnetafel numbers, it seems that's not what I want. The numbering system I need is similar to this:

2-1-4-3-2 which represents second child of the third child of the fourth child of the first child of the second child. I'm not sure if this is an "official" numbering system :(

I think the descendant numbering scheme you describe is similar to the d'Aboville System as described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogic ... ng_systems, except that it uses dots instead of hyphens to separate digits.

FH does support d'Aboville numbering in Descendant Outline Reports but not in Diagrams.

I have not investigated whether it is possible to create an expression in FH to calculate d'Aboville Numbers.

After some thought, I have concluded that it would need a Plugin to calculate d'Aboville Numbers starting from a particular root Individual.
These numbers would need to be saved in a data field for each Descendant, which could be the Custom Id field, or perhaps a Custom Attribute.
This data field would then be displayed in the Diagram.

I've written a Plugin as described above, that can be downloaded from my SkyDrive dAboville Numbers.

Click on the link above, then click on the SkyDrive file and Open with Family Historian to install Plugin.

To run this Plugin use FH Tools > Plugins, select dAboville Numbers, and click Run button.

To add to Tools menu, use Tools > Plugins > More >>, select dAboville Numbers, and tick Add to Tools Menu.
Then you can use Tools > dAboville Numbers to run it.

The Plugin requires you to choose the root Individual and creates the dAboville Numbers in the Custom Id fields (data reference %INDI.REFN%) and finally displays them in a Result Set.

If you want to cancel these Plugin changes, then use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates before saving GEDCOM.

If you keep the dAboville Numbers, they can be shown in Diagrams by using the Custom Id (%INDI.REFN%).

It is easy to change the dot to hyphen if you wish, and another data field could be used instead of Custom Id.
