Pine Road, Holdenhurst, Hampshire

Post by ganstey » 20 Apr 2005 16:26

Hoping someone can help. One of my ancestors died in 1881 aged 1 in Pine Road Holdenhurst (Bournemouth area) Hampshire, but lived in Maple Road. I have found both roads on a modern map, and they are a couple of streets away from each other. I have found Maple Road on the 1881 census, but cannot find Pine Road.

I've tried searching via ancestry.co.uk and this doesn't find any matches for Pine Road in Hampshire or Dorset (its on the border), but it does for other counties.

Does anyone know why Pine Road does not appear on the census, and how I may find out who lived there. The reason for this is that I'm trying to find out whether there was another relation living there, such as 'Granny', or whether she was staying at a doctor or nurse's house when she died.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
Graham

Its possible the street name is in wrong, have you tried pine street, it might also be worth 'walking' the census pages, looking for the street name.

I tried looking for just 'Pine' in Hampshire and Dorset and it came up with lots of hits, but only one in Holdenhurst and that was for 'Pine Villas'.

I've tried looking for adjoining streets as well and can't find them. Just been doing a few other experiments, and I've come to the conclusion that their search doesn't work in the way I want it to [frown].

So, changing the question slightly... how can I find a census reference for a street without knowing the names of anyone living in that street? What I've been doing is just putting the name of the road in the keywords field and leaving everything else blank. Maybe I just have to trawl through the entire census for that district until I find it.

There are only 14 districts in Holdenhurst so you could view the enumeration pages for the districts

Looks like I need District 24 which isn't on the site yet [cry].

Guess I'll have to wait until I can get access to a microform copy, or until they add it to the site.

Thanks for your help anyway Jane.

Help - how do you search for an address on ancestry.co.uk. I know you can do it on the 1901 gov site but didn't realise you could for the other census years on ancestry

I don't think you can search for an address as such. What I did was leave the top part of the search form entirely blank except for the registration county. I then put the name of the road (also try variations of spelling and abbreviation) in the 'keywords' box.

This seems to work for the 1891 (not 1881 as I stated in my first post) census, but I haven't tried for other years.

Hope this helps
Graham
