FH crashes when trying to open a book

Post by andrewbraid » 28 Nov 2012 16:33

Every time I try to open or create a new book FH is crashing. Is this a bug or something specific to me?

I am using FH 5.0.9 and Windows XP SP3

This could be due to a problem with the driver for your current printer.  Try setting your default printer to the FH PDF Printer before you open a book.

Peter

Thanks. Tried that but still the same.

I remember this did happen when I was beta testing v5 but I assumed the problem had been fixed.

Jane

The book opens OK in the sample project so it does seem to be something I have done. Any ideas? (I have validated the file and there are no errors.) Would the error report help?

Books are stored in the Books folder of FH_data so I would be tempted to move any existing books out of that folder and see if the program then goes in OK and then move them back in one at a time to see which one is causing the problem.

If you can find the problem, I am sure Calico will want to look at the file (but they might need the whole project) to see what needs to be trapped for.

I have realised that all the books I had were made when I was beta testing v5. I have deleted them all and now it is working OK.

Thank you.

I think the format got tweaked a bit during the beta. So hopefully any new books will be fine.

FH crashes when trying to open a book

Post by andrewbraid » 02 Dec 2012 08:22

I spoke too soon!

I am trying to create a book with about 1,500 individuals in it. I can create it without an index. As soon as I try to add an index FH crashes.

I can create smaller books with an index. Is there a bug?

I have just create a Book with a 2000 Individual Summary Report and added an Index resulting in 3222 pages.

It took a while at both stages, and sometimes FH said Not responding, but it got there in the end.

There have been some problems with the Index feature, but clearly there is not a generic bug, although your data must be exposing some weakness.

Mike

If there is a 'weakness' in my data how do I find it given that the validate function says that everything is OK? Is not the weakness in FH?

Have you adjusted the timeouts on your machine? I get the error within a few seconds of trying to open the book.

Yes, that is what I said. Your data has exposed a weakness in FH, and agree that finding the cause may be difficult.

I am using default settings for just about everything.

Have you tried creating a separate Individual Summary Report with its Index enabled via the Report Options > Index tab Enable index tick box?

Have you tried using Tools > Re-order Out-of-Sequence Data and Tools > Find Uncategorised Data?
If UDF are found, then the UDF List Plugin may help locate them.

If you continue to draw a blank, then you could contact Calico Pie at support@family-historian.co.uk and may be asked to send your entire Project.

Sorry I misread your previous message. I will try what you suggest but I am struggling with GedFamilies at present.

Mike

Finally I have got it to work. For the record I had no UDF records, a few were out of sequence so that might have been the problem.

As you said it is a very slow process although I never got the not responding message.
