Upon entering a new persons data, say the forename, surname, and date, a check/search is made by the program in the currently open file, to see if one already has an entry/entries that are close/compatible with the new persons data. Then allowing the user the selection of an entry or continuation of inputting the data.
This gives the advantage of cutting out unnecessary duplication of data (red herrings etc) and the subsequent merging of the individuals.

Data entry - check if person already exists
I think this would be covered by the check for duplicates option which is already on the wish list.
I suspect the problem with doing anything automatically would be when to do the check. So an option might be better to do a check.
