Weird problem FH, AS and Win 10

Post by Valkrider » 26 Nov 2019 13:00

I recently updated my VM from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro. I now have an issue that I didn't have on Win 7.

In my Surname study I often find new people to add. If the record is for instance an image of a marriage record I use Ancestral Sources to enter the new people in to Family Historian by using the 'Add unrelated individual button'.

Normally my FH window looks like this

On returning to FH from AS I get the usual prompt that the file has been updated and refresh FH. As a result my display then changes to just displaying the focus window without the sources pane. If I select View > Properties in FH the display changes back to how I usually work.

**Update** This only applies if I invoke Ancestral Sources using the plugin from the FH Records window. If I invoke it from the Focus window all is OK.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

To be pedantic, it is not the Sources For pane that is missing, but the whole Property Box.
There seem to be various circumstances where that happens to the Focus Window but I cannot recall specific cases.
Note that when FH reloads its GEDCOM like that, it is effectively starting up from scratch, the same as when you run FH initially. So whatever options apply to opening FH are applied when reloading the GEDCOM.

See Screen view after saving AS to FH (17164).

Have you made any changes to Tools>Preferences>Workspaces? Is the Default Property Box Action When Workspace is Opened set to Open it for the Focus window?

@Mike My default view when opening FH on startup is with the Property Box open.

@Lorna Yes Open It is selected as the default.

As I said it is normal if I start from the Focus Window it is only if I start from the Records Window that this problem arises. It did not happen with Win 7 starting from either.

I can only suggest reporting it to Calico Pie.

I raised this with Calico Pie as suggested by @Mike

They suggested
unticking the Open Workspace Windows Remember Property Box State.
This has fixed the issue for me in Windows 10 but it did not occur for me in Windows 7. Hope this helps someone else.

I have also had this issue but only when adding images to existing sources. I wasn't opening Ancestral Sources via the plugin at all. I don't think I've used Ancestral Sources since upgrading to Win10. I've only recently started using it again after I upgraded my laptop's hard drive earlier in the year from a 7200 SATA to an SSD. I previously had issues with refresh.

Having unticked the setting that Calico Pie advised Colin, it is now not happening. :D
