Descendant Narrative - Date of 'Relationship with..'

Post by Ossie57 » 18 Jul 2019 18:56

Within the Descendant narrative report, if two individual's marriage details were either 'Unknown' or 'Never Married' then there doesn't appear to be a way to enter a date.

So, for example, if John Smith had a relationship with Freda Jones and they had a child but were not married, the report would state, "John Smith had a relationship with Freda Jones", but the date of their relationship would not be visible and should there be multiple relationships, there isnt a way of chronologically listing them. I know I can order the individuals in order of relationship on the focus panel but within the narrative it doesn't read chronologically within other events if there is no date entered for the relationship. If I do enter a date it automatically states that they "were married...".

Is there a way to add a date for an "Unknown" or "Never Married" relationship?

Thanks in advance

I don't see how to date that sort of a relationship - though I've not looked very long.

What I did find that I could do was to go to Fact Types and create a Custom Event for a Family. I'd already got one set up for living together - though not intentionally that sort of "living together"! I could then add the Custom Family Event of "Living Together" with an approximate date.

The result in the Narrative Report is that it no longer says "X had a relationship with Y" down at the bottom. Instead, it says, in the appropriately dated place, in date sequence, "In yyyy (approx) X and Y lived in PPPPP".

You could tune that idea by creating a specific Family Custom Event for "Affair" or whatever you care to call it with some suitable narrative sentence.

To get such relationships into order, use the up/down black arrows to the right of the Spouse tabs in the Property Box.
That is exactly the same as you would do if they were married but did not know all the dates.
Entering a Date in the Marr: box automatically creates a Marriage event, in the same way that entering a Date into the Born: or Died: boxes creates a Birth or Death event, and are evident in the Facts tab.

Similar to Adrian, I have a custom Liaison Family Event with a Sentence Template:
{individual} had a liaison with {spouse/her/him} {date} {place} {their ages}

I also have a custom Co-residence Family Attribute with a Sentence Template:
{date} {couple} lived< in {value}>< at {address}>
