Addresses used with a particular place

Post by arthurk » 12 Apr 2019 13:33

I'm wondering whether there is any way to show a list of Addresses associated with Places. One place I'm thinking about is in the Places property box. For most of my places, the Main tab has a large and unused Notes field; or an extra tab listing just the addresses might be an alternative. However, I can't see any way to do this - have I missed something?

As a workaround I've created a Custom Fact Query:
Columns are:
Place (%FACT.PLAC>%) (Sort Ascending)
Address (%FACT.ADDR%) (Sort Ascending)
Fact (%FACT%)
Person(s) (=GetRecord(%FACT%))
and for Rows I have specified Add unless %FACT.ADDR% is null

This produces a list of Places, with related Addresses next to them, all in alphabetical order. There's a separate line for each fact using the address, but that's OK as long as I don't try to edit the addresses from there, since the changes wouldn't be applied to every instance.

However, I've come across a minor problem with sorting the results. If I want to see the results sorted by Address I click the Address column heading. However, if I then want to go back to sorting by Place and click that heading, the Addresses relating to a Place are no longer in alphabetical order. I know I could just run the query again, but I'm just wondering if I've done something wrong.

Thanks for any help.

Short of writing a Plugin, that is a good summary of everything that is possible.
There is no workaround for the sorting problem.

Thanks for that, Mike. Writing a plugin is beyond me at present, and getting to grips with the language would take a disproportionate amount of time, I think.

Meanwhile, I've found that the existing Address Summary Report plugin can also act as a workaround, though a rather different one. It produces a list with each Address shown once, and optionally including the associated Place. By including the Place and exporting the results to csv, you can then filter them in a spreadsheet to show only the ones with the Place you're interested in.

Yes, I had overlooked that Plugin.
Another idea if you are mainly interested in one Place at a time is the Where Used Records List Plugin.
Rather like your Query, it lists all the Facts, etc, which use that Place and includes a Fact Address column.

Your Query could easily be modified to filter by Place record/name and show all Addresses for just one Place at a time.

Thanks - I already have that one but had forgotten that it includes Addresses.

True - my initial version was really just to see if it was a realistic option, and further refinements would of course be possible.
