Issues with Source Citations

Post by loulou330 » 22 Jul 2018 12:18

Hi

I'm currently adding new source citations and have notice that although I do not have the automatic source citation option checked, all the source citations are updating to the 'new' citation.

I am using the most recent version of 6.2.7

It is difficult to put into words so the following is an example

Created a new source for some mobile phone footage for one particular media file.

Above in the same list is some cine footage already cited as 'cine file - Mr X' - when I added the above mobile phone footage citation the cine film citation updated to mobile phone.

It is all very frustrating and it goes round in a loop

Many thanks,

Louise

I am afraid your description is not very clear. You are using terms such as source, citation, media & footage almost interchangeably, so I don't understand exactly what is getting upset.

It sounds like you are creating a new Source record that on its Media tab is linked to a Media record, which links to a mobile phone media file (presumably some sort of video format). It is not clear whether a Fact has a Citation of that Source record.

It is unclear exactly what is changing as a side effect.
You say "Above in the same list", but is that the list of Source records, or the list of Citations in a yellow Sources For pane, or something else?

Please post a screenshot to make it clearer, as explained in info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics.
Perhaps a before and after of the undesired change.

Hi,

I hope the following points can make what's happening a little clearer

Point 1 : shows the media file 'Sheila & Sean...' (highlighted blue) with the 'source' tab clear

Point 2 : shows the the media file 'Sheila & Sean..' (highlighted blue) with the 'source' now populated with 'Cine - Mr Conroy'

Point 3 : shows that the .jeg file 'John & Marilyn....', located above 'Sheila & Sean...' which does not have the same source but which has now had its source wiped and replaced with the source entitled 'Cine - Mr Conroy'.

This is not a problem I have encountered before in the many years I have been using this wonderful tool.

I hope that my problem now makes sense and that someone can point me in the right direction please.

So your screenshots show an Individual record Media tab with lots of linked Media records.

It is NOT possible to add a Source Citation for any specific highlighted Media record.
So I suspect this is the first time you have tried to do that.

As indicated in the Sources For box, the Cine film - Mr Conroy is cited against the <whole record>, which means the whole Individual record, NOT any specific Media record.

So it does not matter which Media record you select, the <whole record> citation against the Individual is always the same.

I suspect the citation you thought was against the John & Marilyn.... jpeg had a different Sources For identification referring to some other entity such as a Fact.
If you click on the down arrow drop-list to the right of the Sources For box all the entities with an asterisk * have a citation.

Please post a screenshot of the John & Marilyn.... jpeg showing its Sources For citation before adding Cine film - Mr Conroy.
